"Nervous New Driver Going To Stick To Sidewalks Until He’s More Confident"
[Onion, News in Brief]
http://loc...-sidewalks-until-he-1843483369
"...noting that he planned to keep his speed between 20 and 30 mph in order to avoid any collisions with fire hydrants or trees. “For now, I just want to go out and take it around the block a few times so I can get the hang of it. I’m also using the crosswalks to avoid busy intersections, which can be pretty overwhelming when you’re a new driver. Sure, I’ve had a few scrapes with pedestrians here and there, but usually I just honk my horn and they get right out of the way.” At press time, McCormick had decided to continue his driving practice over the weekend by speeding up and down a local hiking trail."

I'm positive that I'll watch that tonight, since I am officially addicted :p

..
Person tries to make a left turn without waiting for oncoming traffic to stop:
http://www...dui0/i_think_this_is_a_winner/
..a little difficult to tell with the sun being on the traffic lights, but the turning car tried to make the turn while the light was still switching from yellow to red (or had just barely gone red). Honda SUV probably at legal fault for running the light, but the Ford car made the bigger defensive error, I'd think. Probably one of those cases where the turning car can't actually see ahead of the turning vehicle in front of them, but they try to piggyback off the previous car's success. I see that all the time and think, "Could you even see anything ahead, or did you just risk it and hope for the best?" It's even scarier when it's a bunch of cars all doing it at once and oncoming traffic has to slow to save their stupid lives ;p

Initially, the biker got provoked too easily considering that he wasn't in primary position (left way too much space for someone to enter the lane), but the hilarity comes from the jeep/suv *stopping* after his intentional swerve. lol... and pay attention because random pedestrians join in to beat up the suv driver and passenger XD

Comments point out that the funniest thing here is that the person recording thought that she was in the right enough that she shared this video online...
"[Florida Woman] harasses a police officer who happens to be her neighbor."
http://www...harasses_a_police_officer_who/
Posted in the comments:
"For those unclear on the context, the police officer was driving into his building where he lives and this woman decided to honk excessively at him because she thought he was breaking into the building. He issued her a citation for it."

I can't find any primary sources. One watermark, @bobafry, just leads to someone who stole the video without sourcing it, and "InShOt" is just a video editing program. The popular assumption is that he entered the secured parking lot in his Fort Lauderdale P.D. cruiser (shown at the start of the video, which he references as having recorded her with his rear camera), and that she somehow (racism?) thought that a uniformed officer was actually a criminal.......... yeah... If she's not racist (seeing a black person and somehow not seeing the uniform or car) or if she's not elitist (seeing a working class person accessing her super 'sclusive apartment), then she's just an idiot ;p

there was a pretty good moment of suspense on celebrity 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' tonight (Dr Phil's phone-a-friend)

i was searching for the clip to post, seems others found Dr Phil as unpleasant as i did :p

one of many negative Dr Phil twitter posts that came up when i searched:
"Dr. Phil is legitimately one of the worst human beings alive but god I forgot just how -stupid- he was. Listening to him talk on Millionaire I just want to kill myself."

Looks like ABC uses a forced "Select your TV Provider" screen to see the episode ( http://abc...aitlin-olson-and-lauren-lapkus ), and they must be clamping down on YouTube uploads because only their own clip of Dr. Phil answering a "milk" question appears. lulz. I remember that one. And that was re-posted to Reddit (r/PublicFreakout ?) a few days ago so I just re-watched it too :D

"i blame her mostly"
Same!
Still, the officer probably could have diffused it from the start. Like, when she says, "I don't think I deserve to pay $80," early on, he could have laid out her options like, "You either pay $80 right now, or I arrest you right now, and you waste the next few hours being processed and waiting for someone to post your bail," instead, he went right to the consequences without a warning.. which is kind of fitting given that he was giving her a citation without a warning ;D (but 6 months with a broken tail light? How would he know that anyways? Had she already been reported but not stopped?)

In the longer video she calls herself a "country girl" to explain her behavior :D

..
"keep in mind, phone-a-friend is always tense & nerve-wracking as seems like over half the time the person runs out of time before answering, probably because they can't see the clock of death ticking"

Yikes. Like Kimmel said, she came really close to screwing that up. People waiting at home for the call should definitely have a little timer ready for perspective.. and give the answer first, *then* talk about how confident the answer was! :p

40:12 - hits another driver head-on (looks like the other driver veered into the shoulder to avoid him — bad move)
1:06:50 - Someone (white truck) apparently tries to help police by blocking Driver and holding the brakes. Such a buzz-kill; I bet he was a booger-eating hall monitor in elementary school. But the white truck gives too much room so Driver escapes.
1:24:55 - Vehicle disabled; Driver and passenger flee on foot, reveal that they don't remember how to run or don't cardio, get caught by officer who runs with his arms flailing like an idiot ;D

This Onion article reminded me of the KMFDM song "Paradise".. "This planet is / A paradise ... For assholes"

..
"Nation’s Politicians, Law Enforcement, Corporate Executives Marvel At Futuristic Utopia They’re Living In"
[Onion: News in Brief]
http://www...nt-corporate-execut-1843568548
"NEW YORK—Expressing disbelief that they were so fortunate to experience a true golden age of prosperity and technological wonder, the nation’s politicians, law enforcement officers, and executives marveled Wednesday at the futuristic utopia they get to live in. “To think that I have all this at my fingertips, whether it’s automated high-volume stock trading or unlimited surveillance footage of my employees, it’s like something out of a science fiction paradise,” said pharmaceutical executive Ron Pollard, who claimed previous generations of police officers, elected officials, and business leaders could never comprehend the world of unlimited possibilities that has been created for them, where they are free to do whatever they want all the time. “Walking through these plants staffed entirely by hyper-efficient robots, facial recognition cameras, maybe even luxury space travel, it’s almost like I’m living in a dream. There’s massive unemployment, and yet the stock market is surging. We’ve finally achieved a perfect society. It’s simply breathtaking to watch law enforcement arresting citizens for just going about their daily lives. Corporate lobbyists write up laws that only benefit the wealthy and elite. It’s like a never-ending dream. If Rockefeller or Henry Frick could see this sublime world, they would weep with joy. I don’t even need to employ a servant anymore when gig workers, that I can summon with the touch of a button, can do so much more at fraction of the cost.” Pollard added that with the rapid advancements of the past few decades he expected his children would inherit a world that, for them, would be even more unrestrained and full of possibilities."

that police chase was painful to watch... as someone who doesn't know police procedures & regularly rams other cars (in video games)

seems like they had multiple opportunities to ram/block him just watching some of those sample areas... & he was driving wrong-way & on sidewalks & hit at least one car so seems justified to be aggressive

then when white truck blocks them, they park far away & slowly decide what to do on foot... the guy must've been like 'get him already!'

..I know that pole fitness (the gymnastic side) can be technical and demanding, but this was mixed a bit too heavily with the stripping performance side (seduction poses), so it doesn't make sense if they were doing a sport demo. I'm just guessing that a pole fitness studio was asked to do a demo but didn't consider the audience, then the performer didn't have time to change the routine, stayed in the same outfit (instead of using leggings, for instance) because it's what she had, and just like that.. kids get a front row view to an 18-or-older show ;p

"then when white truck blocks them, they park far away & slowly decide what to do on foot... the guy must've been like 'get him already!'"

Yeah that was an obvious box-in moment (similar to that other video where the driver kept going back and forth on a dead end street), but they just kept taking their time. The thieves must not have been armed, but the police were maybe still hoping for a fire fight ;)

This gets covered in the video description, but a woman and her son were hiking in Nepal, stopped at a tea shop, and attempted to haggle over tea price with the shop keeper. The shop keeper thinks that Westerners shouldn't get to haggle*, so she starts attacking: throwing stones and swinging sticks.
http://www...er_going_to_visit_nepal_again/
..so, remember to acclimate before getting into conflict with mountain people, because you have to be able to outrun them or fight them ;D

*(definitely a common sentiment around the world; one solution is to have a local guide who haggles with other locals without the locals knowing that the guide works for a Westerner)

Oo, more details:
(the hiker herself explains the events)
http://www...rna-circuit-nepal-my-response/
She wasn't just haggling: "After getting my son and I a drink, the woman charged me THREE TIMES the printed price in the menu. When I questioned this, she went crazy saying I had to pay or she would kill me. I paid the money and left, she then chased us along the mountain side screaming and throwing rocks."
Also,
"I did take a photograph of the outside of the shop, I was writing an account of my travels and was going to later write about how stopping here would inflate the price of a drink to three times that of other places. It was in fact this attempt at a photograph that triggered the situation."

Like, they're posting pictures of buildings looted and on fire ( http://imgur.com/gallery/710tbZ1 , http://imgur.com/gallery/pv7q5ed ) and have shown outrage over the fact that fire trucks need armed escorts to get through crowds ( http://imgur.com/gallery/s1geonK ), but then they'll post pictures of police pepper-spraying crowds ( http://imgur.com/gallery/VHLKkqa ) and not see a connection (and all of these posts were simultaneously on the front page of Imgur).. like.. maybe police escalate crowd dispersion measures after crowds have turned violent, have attempted to flip vehicles, and have attacked and blocked police units?

I don't *condone* police spraying OC from a moving vehicle (especially not without them directly preceding that spraying with a warning and without them making an intelligent decision to target a problem group within the mob), but I'm also not going to pretend that their decision to spray OC came out of nowhere. :|

..
"Proof of polycultural redneckery."

Pretty neat! I wonder about the cost/benefit on that.. like, does the soda cost less than the fish? ;)

..
"he was kinda looking like a weak link w/ way he held the gun & walked"

Lots of weird confused walking around by the thieves. Not a lot of urgency or coordination. They must be really comfortable with a slow police response or something.. and seeing all those people just driving by, ignoring the victims afterwards.. the criminals must not worry about bystander involvement either.

"here's a looting video where cops actually showed up..."

I've been hoping for more of those! :D

I had to look into why police weren't arresting looters. Found this:
"LAPD focused on peaceful protesters while ignoring looting, business owners say"
[L.A. Times; June 1, 2020]
http://www...tics-during-protests-critiqued
"Police Chief Michel Moore ... said he considered arresting everyone, but there were too many protesters and not enough officers. [/] So, “rather than get in a physical fight with everyone,” he said, he determined the group simply had to be dispersed."

He goes on to say that basically they're so overwhelmed that they just try to push groups of people into less vulnerable parts of the city where their actions can be controlled or managed. So it's gotten to that point: they can't even arrest the criminals in front of them because they do not have the time and resources. They talk about how they don't want to get the National Guard in full force yet because "they were conscious of striking the right tone in part because the LAPD has not done so in the past."

I guess that makes sense... if they request more National Guard presence (they already have about 1000 troops; they make the comparison that 13000 troops were used to end the Watts riots https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-06-01/national-guard-los-angeles-unrest-protests-george-floyd ), it means even more violent protests.. so they're taking losses and being defensive while hoping things calm down... Pretty much a lose-lose situation. They're trying not to offend/"dehumanize" the population by being too present, and trying to stop looting for the business owners, and only getting middling results for either side.

I first ran into this notion of imported protestors when I was in Berkeley in the late 90's. This salty chikk came in with signage and I asked her about her stance on the topic (closing public radio on campus) and if she was a fan of the station. She said she never listened to it and she was from Oregon. I asked why did she gaf about the issue to which she explains she just travels around and protests. I guess it's some form of vacation or tourism? One for the stinky protestor package please!

feel-good story of the day:

"
A man died while trying to blow up an ATM in North Philadelphia early Tuesday as thieves blew up or stole cash machines across the city overnight in what authorities believe was an “organized" and “coordinated" effort, police said.

The 24-year-old, whose name has not been released, suffered trauma to his upper body after placing explosive in a sidewalk-facing ATM outside a sports bar along North 2nd Street near Susquehanna Avenue around 6:15 a.m., Philadelphia police said.

At least 10 machines were vandalized – mainly at neighborhood convenience stores, on sidewalks and gas stations, police said. In most cases, police said, thieves set off explosive devices, blowing up the machines before making off with the cash. In other cases, they would just steal the machines.
"

probably not the specific incident in question, but a sample:

lulz, could be :D
So weird, though... How do people get amped on other peoples' causes? Like, I couldn't go to a concert for a band that I'm not into. Crowd energy can be contagious, but part of getting to share in that energy tends to be connection to the ideas afoot (though I've gone to concerts for music I like and *not* connected with the crowd). Maybe they just look around for the raw emotion and don't care about the concepts? Or Tyler Durden going to terminal illness support groups to feel something? Or just the excitement of lawlessness? I get that one ;D

..
The picture here adds some spice:

"Police Didn’t Spend Millions On Awesome Tank Just To Let Protests Stay Peaceful"
[Onion: News in Brief]
http://www...ome-tank-just-to-le-1843860163
"“We got the city to drop, like, $10 million on this sick tank and you expect we’ll just let people stand there chanting?” said LAPD chief Michael Moore, adding there was “no way in hell” that the department would let something like peaceful demonstrations stop them from making use of the vehicle’s “totally tricked-out” weapons system, armor, and ability to ram through virtually everything in its path. “I mean, the city wouldn’t buy a teacher a pencil and then tell them not to use it, right? This is the kind of hardware you just can’t let sit gathering dust—same with the grenade launchers, drones, and tear gas. We have whole storage bays full of projectiles and we’re supposed to just not use them? Get real. They wouldn’t give us all this killer stuff if we weren’t supposed to have a little fun.” LAPD officials added that the city’s residents deserved to witness the full scope of all the badass shit their tax dollars could do."

=================

An Australian man accused of breaking into the wrong house as he sought to fulfill another man’s sex fantasy has been found not guilty.

On Thursday, a judge in New South Wales cleared Terrence Leroy of charges stemming from an incident last July where he was one of two men hired to carry out a stranger’s sexual fantasy of being tied up while clad in his underpants.

Problem is, Leroy and his partner went to the wrong house.

The case of mistaken identity began after a man living in western NSW near Griffith went on Facebook looking for someone willing to tie him up and then rub a broom handle around his underwear, according to the Australian Associated Press.

“He was willing to pay $5000 if it was ‘really good’,” Judge Sean Grant noted in the ruling.

A police officer testified that the man who hired Leroy and another unidentified man had a “history and proclivity for engaging the services of people.”

After finding two people willing to engage in the roleplaying fantasy, he sent his address to them. But on the day the fantasy was to take place, Leroy and his partner showed up at the wrong house on the client’s street.

The home’s occupant, who was on his way to use the bathroom, heard noise and assumed it was a friend who came by each day to make coffee.

The victim yelled out, “Bugger off, it’s too early” but turned on his night light after hearing someone ask if he was the name of the man waiting for the kinky roleplay. The victim then turned on a light and saw two men carrying machetes standing next to his bed, according to the Guardian.

After the victim spoke his own name, Leroy and his colleague realized the error and started to leave. According to court documents, one of them said, “Sorry mate.” The other shook the victim’s hand and said, “Bye.”

They then drove to the correct address while the man they left behind contacted the police.

Police eventually showed up, found the machetes in the car and charged Leroy with entering a home intending to intimidate while armed with an offensive weapon.

Grant ruled that the prosecution had not proved Leroy intended to intimidate.

During the trial, Leroy’s attorney successfully argued that the whole mishap, as he told the court, arose from “a commercial agreement to tie up and stroke a semi-naked man in his underpants with a broom,” according to the Australian AP.

Do those idiots think they're in 300 or something? Fuck..

..
"this one making the rounds too"

Yikes D:
Blood out of the ears.. That can happen in elderly people with high blood pressure — they can get Increased Intracranial Pressure (ICP), so if they get head injuries then the high pressure gets relieved by blood exiting through the ear canal. Another reason to tailor the level of force to the situation (old people break easily, so don't mishandle them).

People in the comments were complaining about them taking so long to apply aid, but to explain: that's just formation specialization. The front line keeps pushing forward while support personnel hang back. So before aid can be delivered, the front line has to move past the injured person (this allows the person to be protected while treated). You can see in the video that the National Guard peeps start treating the man once he's behind the lines. I'm not justifying the injury (that should not have happened), but their movement can at least be explained.

..
"cops getting fed up w/ the peacefulness (sorta like the tank article)"

I wish we had different angles on that, and with all of those cell phones there, you'd think someone in the comments would have posted one.

The officer first lunges at someone (guy with black mask and sunglasses) who was farther back rather than going for the front line of peeps. And that guy gets targeted further and seems not to back down despite getting hit (not that backing down should be virtuous — pretty cool that he doesn't). Just makes me wonder. Like.. why *that* guy? Pics of him:
http://i.imgur.com/afE4Jku.jpg

I would not excuse this officer's behavior in any case; at the very least, police need to be using loud speakers or loud verbal warnings to announce any plans to use force, and they need to do so with enough time for people to leave if they don't want to meet that force. Like, "Hey, if you do not back up, we will begin striking you with batons right now." *Should* they be striking people at all? Likely not. But could they even do *that* much (announce imminent consequences)?

That's a super important step (verbal warnings). In *good* force continuum training, students get taught to yell the commands as part of executing the moves (e.g., yelling, "Get back!" and *then* push-kicking or striking — *each* time they strike). It forces re-evaluation and allows compliance rather than letting students go on a strike frenzy. And any increase in force (like moving from pushes to strikes or strikes to projectiles) requires *further* verbal warnings. I have not been seeing verbal warnings in any of these videos. I'd forgive some for the editing.. but until going on a Google spree just now, I hadn't seen one video where police give commands. Found these:

• "Arlington County pulls officers from D.C. after tear gas used on protesters"
[CBSNews; June 2nd, 2020]
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/arlington-county-virginia-officers-washington-dc-tear-gas-protesters/

http://www.wsls.com/news/local/2020/05/30/target-at-valley-view-closes-early-as-a-precaution-from-protests-in-roanoke/
"1:16 A.M. UPDATE
Police have given protesters a final warning before arresting them for unlawful assembly.
Most people are heeding that warning and leaving."
• Warning of impending arrests for violating curfew: https://twitter.com/AngelaMWilhelm/status/1267967505982775296
• "Police warn crowd to move or be pepper sprayed at Plaza protest in Kansas City"
[Kansas City Star; May 29, 2020]
http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article243102941.html
"police warned protesters that they would be sprayed with pepper spray if they did not leave the street."

That last one had some video showing loud-speakers in use and lots of warnings without any apparent escalation So that's nice at least.. but it seems like the trend has been to warn people that they'll get brutalized and arrested if they hang around after curfew, then, once curfew arrives, it's time for unrestricted ultraviolence. Looks like officers just get told, "Beat them until they run away," with no further orders. For it to be this widespread, and with no articles (that I saw) talking about warnings... That's widespread bad leadership and bad training. There better be police reforms after this..

Hopefully not. It would be nice if bad police had to confront their image problem by seeing how more competent people handle the same situation.

One National Guard person *did* make a bad social media decision a few days ago:
"Alleged post by Massachusetts National Guard soldier telling protesters ‘I can’t wait to shoot you’ prompts his removal from active status"
http://www...emoval-from-active-status.html
..but no actual excessive force complaints. It could be because the National Guard hasn't been doing riot control (yet?). Primarily they've been posted at vulnerable hot spots and set to patrolling — kind of a deterrent role.

"some guy in comments says prison riot guards

The mustaches and facial hair would be against D.C. police grooming standards*, so it'd be right to move away from all of them being off-duty police..

I suppose privately-funded militia could make some sense since their gear has some dissimilarities... A few had new Condor plate carriers, some had '90s- or early '00s-looking SWAT gear (e.g., the guy at the start of the video with prescription glasses and no gloves on has an older style of vest but was wearing modern SWAT digital urban cammie bottoms). Helmets and shields tend to be issued items (expensive and get beat up quickly) whereas having a black light plate carrier, vest, or WileyX ballistic glasses would be something purchased during one's career. But, a militia tends to have even *more* discrepancies between gear, and they carry lots of impractical/exotic things — like they think they're going on an elephant-hunting trip. These people all look like former law enforcement and/or former military who went into law enforcement.. and corrections.

So I believe the confirmation: a crisis-management unit of the Bureau of Prisons (as confirmed by the BOP http://www...dc-amid-protests-curfew-2020-6 ).

"The BOP also added in a separate statement that the officers were part of Special Operations Response Teams, (SORT) which includes members who "are highly trained tactical units capable of responding to prison disturbances, and providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies during emergencies;" and Disturbance Control Teams that specialize in crowd-control scenarios." ( http://www.businessinsider.com/officers-special-trained-prison-riots-face-off-with-dc-protesters-2020-6 )

An on-call Brute Squad. ;) .. They're probably covering shortfalls in police hours. Police overtime can get expensive, so it may just be cheaper to contract the hours out right now. Not having insignia would be more of a funding thing than some shadow government non-accountability, though I'd bet/hope that public outcry will force the BOP to make patches for these teams in the future.

*("A well-trimmed mustache shall not extend more than one-quarter of an inch below or beyond the line of an individual’s upper lip. Handlebar mustaches are prohibited. A well-trimmed beard or goatee shall not exceed one-quarter of an inch in length" http://go.mpdconline.com/GO/GO_110_11.pdf )

All that being said... should they be there? Probably not. :p
