rank | Sat May 30 17:42:42 2009 For those unwilling to watch the 80 minutes of goodness. http://mashable.com/2009/05/28/google-wave-guide/ I am seriously considering learning Java so I can legitimately apply to get a developer sandbox account. What gadgets or robots do you think people would like to see in the Waves? I was thinking something along the lines of link-to-wiki (though I'm sure someone probably has had this in mind) or link-to-music profile at last.fm. Another idea I had was a simple as-of-typing currency conversion, which should be a little less reliant on external APIs. Thoughts? |

rank | Sat May 30 17:54:17 2009 Actually, now I'm looking at the possibility of creating a robot that will automatically detect the time zones of the contributors and provide a time zone "translation" automatically. |
|
chicgeek
rank | Sat May 30 18:03:59 2009 "Zoney"? - a robot (perhaps gadget) that will allow contributors to easily interpret time zones within wave text. Robot would be able to detect user time zone settings and provide both the origin and converted times. Example: User A (GMT) types: The site will go live at 20:00GMT. User B (-5) sees: The site will go live at 20:00GMT (15:00EST). User C (-7) sees: The site will go live at 20:00GMT (13:00PST). |

rank | Sat May 30 18:13:51 2009 ok ya, that looks fucking cool. you could use making a UGT gadget as your learning tool, fyre :) 2 things im moderately concerned about: -vendor lock in. -i did not see a clear definition of what it means by 'open source'. client? server side architecture will be open source? -cross platform compatibility. i dislike that a company with virtually all of its architecture built on linux continues to release linux versions as an afterthought. (google earth, chrome) |

pillz
rank | Sat May 30 19:28:21 2009 earthpig - it is Google. they will not allow you to host a Wave on your own servers. of that im pretty certain. although i guess you may be able to 'rent' out google wave servers to set up your own wave? when google says open source they very rarely mean it in the sense we want them to. |
|
earthpig
rank | Sat May 30 19:48:46 2009 i know. i'd prefer them not to use the term. use 'shared-source' or something microsofty like that. |

rank | Sat May 30 20:00:30 2009 I still dont see a point in Wave. It brings nothing to the table that Vent/IRC dont already have. |

rank | Mon Jun 01 23:22:14 2009 So I could present this to the president as a new method of content delivery, spend the next 3 months "investigating" its applications to our needs, conclude that we are fine as is. If only google could come out with a few of these a year. |
