This must be a big setback for the US. Humiliating also. Why Canada and not the US also? Europe continues to treat America very badly. This would never have happened if Trump was the president.

Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with “serious tariffs” and a cut to trade after the bloc proposed to make Canada its first ever associate member, calling the idea “laughable”.

Back to front logic.

The way you had secured Canada as a satellite state was a carefully crafted set of mechanisms your current govt dismantled because they thought they were woke and unmanly. Those mechanisms were your influence. Dismantling them shrunk your sphere(s)*.

If it was truly in your sphere of influence, this wouldn't be happening.

The bad thing that is happening is your influence is collapsing and your sphere is shrinking.

Like Russia, you may blame outside forces for this and interpret it as an external threat - but it's internally driven decadent decline. And attempts to reassert influence with simple coercive military threats are likey to exacerbate the problem or achieve counter productive effects (you own it, but you broke it, and so it's not a net liability not an asset).

Unlike Russia, it would be very easy to reverse... If you had the political cohesion to do it, but you don't. You don't even have the political cohesion to ditch this obliviously corrupt, criminal, idiot for obvious malfeasance and abuse of public office.

Or, for that matter, win a war against Iran.

Deeply divided countries are weak countries because they cannot translate their resources into action. Plus you have had a series of governments that have hollowed out state capacity.

Tl;Dr Canada isn't a bad thing, it's a symptom of a bad thing and you can't really stop it at this point** except by addressing MAGA and the traitors in your midst.

*Can't resist: there's such a good read across to MAGAs preoccupation with supplementary testosterone injections - long term use of which has the side effect of testicular atrophy.

**You could - theoretically - fuck Canada up, but that would destroy the value of it being a satellite state in the first place and increase the damage of the disintegration of the North American economy. Also I suspect in practice that having US soldiers shoot people that look like our light even be their friends, family and neighbours is the kind of thing that triggers mutiny, civil war or revolt.
