The Kennedy Center’s board voted to close the performing arts venue on Tuesday, President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. The announcement came hours after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama appointee, ruled Trump’s name cannot be added to the building. Trump said the shutdown “for Safety reasons” would be immediate — but that a planned renovation would not happen unless or until the building was allowed to be renamed. Trump said the Justice Department would be filing an “expedited appeal” of Cooper’s ruling and was prepared to take the legal fight to the Supreme Court if need be. He suggested the shutdown could be permanent if does not get his way. “If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place,” he added. Trump took over the Kennedy Center shortly after he returned to the White House, stocking the board with loyalists and making himself chair.
