According to the legal complaint, filed in a US district court in California on Friday, Samsung began using an image of Lipa on an image of a TV screen printed on its cardboard packaging for “a significant portion” of its TVs sold in the US last year. When the 30-year-old British singer became aware of the image in June 2025, she says she immediately demanded that the company stop using it but claims Samsung was “dismissive and callous” and “repeatedly refused”. “Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever,” the lawsuit states. “Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.” The suit states that Lipa owns the copyright to the photograph, which was taken backstage before a performance at the Austin City Limits festival in 2024. Lipa is alleging copyright violation, a violation of the California right of publicity statute, a federal Lanham Act claim, and trademark claims. The lawsuit claims that Samsung had financially benefited from giving the appearance of her endorsement, with the lawsuit quoting alleged comments shared on social media from her fans. “I’d get that TV just because Dua Lipa is on it,” wrote one. “That’s how obsessed I am. That’s how much I love her.” “I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” wrote another. Another wrote: “If you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it.” The suit states that Lipa was “highly selective” in making product endorsements and had brand deals with Apple, Porsche, Versace, Bulgari and Nespresso, among others. Samsung’s conduct “makes a mockery of her hard work in establishing a successful brand and has deprived her of the ability to control and monetize her assets”, the lawsuit reads. Lipa is seeking a permanent injunction against Samsung and “no less than $15m” in actual damages, plus punitive damages and legal costs. Samsung has yet to respond to requests for comment. |

rank | Mon May 11 21:22:20 It doesn't matter. They still can't use your image to sell their products without your permission. - |

rank | Mon May 11 21:54:04 I think it depends on the contract. Perhaps she didn’t read the contract throughly. All she wanted to do is to be a model (like most women do) and earn some easy money (also like most women want to do), so she agreed to have her photograps taken. But in the contract it says that they may use the photos as they wish, including to sell the right to use photos for commercial purposes. Etc. |

rank | Mon May 11 22:46:27 I had a short modelling period many lunar orbits ago that led to a couple of embarrassing incidents lol. 1) At the time, I was dating a girl whom a member of the Swedish 1% biker gang The Brotherhood had a broken heart over. I wasnt worried about them because I was a cool kid around town and had the protection of Milan Sevo, known as the godfather of Sweden back then. She told me that he was badmouthing me about town, so I went into the bar he worked at after hours and threatened him. He was so shocked that he denied who he was and said the guy I was looking for wasnt working that night. I apologized and left (he would probably have killed me if we'd started fighting lol). 2) A modelling agency phoned me and asked me if I wanted to do a billboard job for Bokakademin, Swedens version of Barnes and Noble. I'd be featured prominently on billboards all over Sweden and Finland. 3) When I got to the studio, there he was - the guy I had threatened a few weeks ago. The photographer said that we were to sit cross-legged in front of each other and look each other deep in the eyes - whether best friends or lovers was to be left ambigious. The awkwardness of us both trying to appear to be gazing deeply into each others eyes while simultaneously avoiding actually looking at each other still makes me feel nervous, but there we were on billboards across half of Scandinavia lol. We became friends years later and laughed at the whole affair. But even though he's a lot tougher than me, the fact that I threatened him that way left a mark and he always acted slightly subordinate to me, sort of metaphorically walking half a step behind me. Ah, to be young, pretty and foolish again lol |
