Ive flown quite a lot all my life until I was about 40. As a kid, I flew from London to my grandmother in Sweden a couple of times a year every year. It was no more dramatic than riding a bud, but a bit more exciting.

At about the age of 25, I was sitting on a plane waiting for take-off for a holiday in Greece when I out of the blue felt a sense of terror creeping up at all the weird sounds from the engines.

For the entire flight, every sound horrified me and I was terrified the plance was going to crash.

Ever since then, I have a irrational, strong fear of flying and have to take sleeping pills.

Came out of nowhere and now I avoid flying as much as possible. If I do fly, I make sure I have heavy sleeping pills. They usually knock me out cold except when flying, when all they do is calm me somewhat.

Im in favor of universal healthcare.

Like my personal HC is decent, my primary reason is I feel like it would be ALOT less confusing.

The first time I flew I was a kid. Maybe 10 y.o. I wasn’t scared or worried at all. When the plane landed (in Greece) everyone on the plane started to clap their hands. I asked my dad ”whY is eVeryOne clapiNg thEir hAnDs?”. He said ”It is because they are happy that the flight and the landing went well”. It was then that I learned that shit can happen and you can die a horribly death.

Since then I have always felt a slight sense of unease when I have flown. But only during take-off and landing, which is where most accidents happen.

When I book a flight I also make that I’m not flying with a Boeing 737 Max.

Flying is great, especially if you have a window seat.

It can be a bit nerve-wracking if it's your first time. That goes away pretty quickly though.

The first time you fly through inclement weather can also make you nervous. Like, the plane shouldn't be shaking that much, should it?

But it's completely normal, and you end up being fine.

Air travel is by far the safest form of travel. So hope you enjoyed it.

They always say air travel is the safest, but look at the rigorous controls before every flight. Imagine if every train, car, etc did that. Their numbers would drop like fuck too, but they dont need that kind of control, because a car accident doesnt automatically mean a huge tragedy 99 times out of 100

Maxes are perfectly safe. Even the MCAS bug required the contribution of incompetent 3rd world pilots/maintenence to actually crash, and that was fixed long ago at this point.

You are orders of magnitude more likely to be stabbed by a random negro in STL or crash the car than be hurt on the plane.

Hope you had a window seat!

"Like my personal HC is decent, my primary reason is I feel like it would be ALOT less confusing."

See, this is one of the things that are strategically wrong and also amoral about the individualist/anti-communal ideology of rightwing US; one that is spreading more and more to the rest of the West via social media and via increased fears of a worsening future in the West.

A fear that makes a lot of people think, fuck, I cant be thinking about other people in a time when my own future might be under threat.

A fear that makes a lot of people vote for selfish far-right parties that say, "fuck other people, you need to be thinking only about yourself now that things are looking dangerous". Which is why Germans voted for Hitler, because going from being a powerful country to a poor country scared the citizens, and here was this guy pointing out a very visible "cause" and a solution to their increasing poverty and why political illiterates fall for Trumps same kinds of lies.

Its a fear that for example in the military, they have to train you to not react to out of pure selfishness. Because thats the easiest perspective to fall into when facing danger, but is a bad strategy if you want your group to survive (not to mention the morality issues).

I grew up in a world where, when you voted, you didnt just think "whats best for me personally?" - you thought "Whats best for my country - for most of my fellow countrymen?" Thats a much more patriotic perspective than the selfishness of the rugged Maga individualist.

Ive never ever voted based on a policy that might benefit me personally. Every vote I have ever cast has been after considering "what's best for the majority of the country?"

WTB, See, most people in the US have decent HC.

I do think others should have HC. Our system basically has it so if you can't pay for it its free...it does vary a bit by state.

Logistically I think universal would be simpler as the primary benefit.

"Only 56% of working-age adults in the USA had coverage considered adequate and affordable."

Im not talking about a very slight majority, Im talking about whats best for almost everyone of my fellow countrymen. Health and sickness are huge aspects of life. If only 56% of Swedes had clean water, Id be disgusted at Sweden.

The entire developed world except for the USA sees free health care for all as natural as clean water.

Congo provides clean water to as many people as have good healthcare in the USA.

To the rest of the developed world, the USA is at Congo levels when it comes to that.

The first time I flew was when I joined the Navy and we flew from Philly to Sandiego. Philly to Burbank with 4 stops. Burbank changed planes, there to San Diago. 4 engine prop airplane. I believe a DC7. By the time we landed in Burbank I considered myself a world traveler. Flying doesn't bother me anymore.
