CRIME
Uber driver shot and killed by 81-year-old Ohio man after both received scam calls, police say
By S. Dev

Updated on: April 17, 2024 / 2:56 PM EDT / CBS News

An 81-year-old Ohio man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting an Uber driver who thought she was picking up a package from the man's house.

"Ms. Hall, suffering from medical conditions and unarmed, made no threats or assaults toward Mr. Brock, and made no demands, other than to ask about the package she was sent to retrieve," the sheriff's office said.

Brock allegedly held Hall at gunpoint and demanded to know the identities of the people who had called him. He also took Hall's phone and refused to allow her to leave, officials said, adding that Brock did not try to call police at this point.

When Hall tried to get back into her vehicle, Brock allegedly shot her, and there was a "subsequent scuffle at the door of Ms. Hall's vehicle," the sheriff's office said. Brock then allegedly shot her two more times, before calling 911.

Brock is charged with murder, which carries a penalty of 15 years to life in prison, court records showed. Police are considering other charges. Brock pleaded not guilty, and bail was set at $200,000, court records showed.

Let's not pretend that this guy would've probalby not shot her had she been white either. Racist addicts to social media like Cherub already think they know everything.

reading the article the police should be looking for the person that made the phone calls and charge that person with murder.
The old guy was told if he didn't pay $12,000 him and his nephew would be killed then the caller sent the Uber to pick up a package.
Of course he tried to stop the driver from leaving he thought his nephews life was in danger.

pretty sure i recall Mark Rober or someone detailing scams where they utilize unaware delivery drivers (& airBnBs for that matter)

lol wut. Dukhat's theory of mind for me is pretty hilarious :D

But yeah, sounds like both parties were set up. Mark Rober did indeed cover this in one of the Glitter device videos. (Playlist set to the two scam center episodes: http://www...nexNopBzUKdl3QKoADJlS8&index=5 ).

You honestly have to wonder about stuff like this as these scams get more sophisticated and target people who don't know about this sort of thing. I once got a pretty convincing message in my spam folder that looked like it had come from my own inbox, yadda yadda yadda, Putin granted me Russian citizenship. Life is wild.

I don't think you can justify shooting someone to try and prevent them leaving just because you think they might be part of a kidnap plot where another life is at risk.

But even if you can, shooting them two more times after you've shot them?

Also failure to involve the police after you have them at gunpoint and their phone. Not a good position.

Difficult to argue self-defense under the circumstances, or even that any use of lethal force could "help" his nephew.

The hoaxers ought to be brought to justice too, but on the face of it, it sounds very much like the guy is guilty of murder, whatever good reason he thought he had to behave that way.

Love how liberals are turning this into a, yet again, race issue. Some shit head scared the old man. Some shit head set up the uber driver. I doubt the shit head knew the race or politics of either party they set up. But yes, the old man panicked and I doubt the uber driver did anything to properly calm the situation.

There is a big difference between saying "hey, I got this message to pick up a package here and oh you don't know what I'm talking about I'm as confused as you"

And

"I'm here to pick up a package and fuck you you wasted my time for not giving me the package I'm leaving now"

They aren't obliged to. From their perspective he's a crazy guy that's called them to his address, is ranting crazy shit and stole their phone. The instinct is to get the fuck out of there.

"They aren't obligated too"

You're right they aren't and they probably didn't. Now they are dead. Your logic is flawless.

[murder (left-wing dogma bot)]: "They knew their audience."

Nice. This is a good one because I'm pretty sure it's murder being retarded, but I had to look twice and ask whether he was just *pretending* for once.

[Sam]: "1 black person murdered by whites: the same clowns: freak the fuck out!! Meltdown! Racism!"

Yup. Recall how little they cared when a "trans"-man murdered 6 Christians and cited left-wing dogmas in her manifesto. They could not care less, and tumblefag even pretended not to see the connection between anti-Whiteism and the shooter's other violent conclusions.

We start from the fact the driver is dead, killed by the old man.

The question is whether the old man is guilty of murder.

The story is framed from the perspective of the old man, not the driver. So you know that the old man is (we assume) mostly* rational and just panicked and could be convinced of the driver's innocence if they stay calm and explain.

From the driver's perspective they are called to an address, the guy that called them denies all knowledge and starts angrily ranting about kidnappers and phonecalls, accusing them of being a conspiracy, steals their phone etc.

Your main thought then is going to be "lunatic" "druggy" "dementia" - dangerous and irrational, GTFO - because trying to talk a crazy armed dude down could just as well involve saying something that sets him off.

The old man's defense is all about how he had good reason to kill someone under the circumstances, the story framed from his perspective is more sympathetic than a more objective third party framing.

If you applied the logic of stand your ground, perhaps the driver has the better case (if they'd been armed) to shoot the old man.

To me it seems the old man's actions are criminal.

*I mean within degrees. Not calling the cops and attempting to detain the driver under threat of lethal force don't seem exactly rational acts to me but let's make allowances for age and panic and possibly being a bit dim.

But this is the basic problem with high gun prevalence: it encourages people (and half the population has an IQ below average) to do crazy shit like trying to do a Liam Neeson instead of calling the cops.

Imagine the same news story told from the perspective of the Uber driver:

(Driver), an uber driver was shot to death by a resident of (town) today. They were called to (address) to pick up a package, whereupon (old man), 81, resident at the address, started shouting incoherent accusations that the driver had kidnapped their nephew. While brandishing a firearm, (old man) seized (driver's) phone and demanding they reveal the names of co-conspirators.

(Driver) was then shot by (old man), and trying to make an escape to their vehicle, blah then assaulted and shot the driver four more times.

Yeah seb you are a fucking retard and didn't get my point.

Yes, the old man is a murderer and should go to jail for manslaughter. 10 years min.

My point was, you are correct that the uber driver had no moral obligation to defuse the situation. So fucking what. Done dude has a gun on you. Use common sense and save your life. This dumb bitch didn't do that and followed your code of "It's not part of my job" and got herself killed.

How the fuck are you alive? You clearly have never spent a day on the streets you cushy couch living mother fucker.
