The bridge repair crew, despite the massive population of unemployed negroes right there, were all mexican migrants.

With 100,000 tons of bouyancy bouncing around and twisted by big storm waves, on a moment arm if some 500 feet, they really have to be very strong to survive storms. Even cargo ships and passenger liners. Many cases of big merchant ships hitting smaller armored warships and the warships always lose. The most famous case is when the sebs somehow fucked up basic escort duty and managed to place a cruiser in front of the large ocean liner queen mary. The cruiser sank rapidly and the liner suffered very minor damage. Shear mass helps a lot.
