He was on a cruise but this was a day excursion on a different ship with a pirate theme. When he jumped the ship stopped and attempted a rescue. The only thing you got right was that it was stupid for him to jump. A week long cruise if you don't go complete low budget would be around $500. They can get much more expensive of course but don't need to be.

Keep in mind he jumped off a boat after the sun set which is fucking stupid behavior, even a trained swimmer wouldn't do that without everyone on deck aware of what's happening and a bunch of deck lights flooding the area. Anyways. Shark attack would explain why he drifted away from the thrown bouy and the boat. You'd assume he would have screamed for help but it's possible he got attacked, got a chunk of his body taken off and went into shock.

I imagine the poor kid was dragged underwater by the attack, and though most of the time a shark will let go of people after realizing it isn't easy food, if the kid went into shock and swallowed a bunch of water and/or was too injured to surface, he would have drowned swiftly. Also cruises and Caribbean/Bahama resorts are some of the most cost-effective ways to vacation, especially because they are all-inclusive. Plus it sounds like this was a class trip, so it would have been organized by a travel agency and parents and the school may have contributed. Everyone has their stupid moments, especially in their teens and twenties, it's tragic that this one ended his life.

My point is that if a light source was lighting up a shark so brightly, grey colors sharks, it would have created massive amounts of reflections (much more than we see) on the surrounding water. Since there are no such massive reflections (just a reasonable amount you expect from the lights on the boat), and sharks are not white like that.... there is no shark!!!
