Do you remember playing this game? It was like a spacefaring version of Utopia IIRC. I'm sure you and I played together, though, as part of the same Kingdom, back in the day. But other than that, my memory is fuzzy.

Not really related but it will TTT the thread.

Ive dabbled with Tom hacks in the past but really been going down a rabbit hole on Zelda and Castlevania tom hacks.

Zelda 2 the winter soltice was sweet, as is the adventure of link.

Aol actually so far seems to be a masterpiece. I really wish the controls were as smooth as a regular Zelda game, they are fine, but "off".

I havnt played either yet but

Simon quests adventure in transylvania looked stunning.Honestly it looks like the greatest Castlvania game ever which isnt legally a castlevania game and isntead of Simon Belmont his name is actually "Simon quest" not to be confused with "Simon's quest" the castlevania game starring Simonn Belmont.

1 minute clip on transylvania adventure of Simon Quest.

Mega man would probably be decent hacks.

I played some other space game with licker and a few other forum guys. A truly toxic environment. Way worse than here.

It was fun

Okay, kinda remember licker being in there early, but dying. Now I think I'm getting the name wrong though. Dystopia was a utopia clone game I played, but I don't think it was the spacefaring one we played in UP at the time. But damned if I can remember.

Was it like a turn based 4X space game?

For some reason I have kept the memory of a unit that looked like a budhist monk (most of the others were space ships, so I guess it stood out). And a player called The Fabulous Master. Also I think the name of the game started with a U.

It's all very vague :')

Yeah, it was a 4X game, and you started out with a few neighbors in an alliance. UP made an alliance. I remember the spaceship units, and both The Fabulous Master and the monk unit ring a bell.

Some googling has resulted in the suggestion in some reddit thread that it was called Ultra Corp, which feels right to me. I think that's its name.

But I can't quickly find any trace of it anymore though.

I played a Utopia clone called Dystopia years and years ago. It wasn't spacefaring. They had a race called the weevil. It was like a joke race with a ridiculous population bonus but horribly weak military units.

The same game I was thinking of up there...not the space one. It was more dark fantasy based.

You're welcome. I glad you picked up that I meant that as a compliment, you sly son-of-a-bitch. ;)

Not sure where these feelings came from today, but yep, it appears as if I've contracted a bout of nostalgia. Sorry if it is contagious. :p

It was only about 12 years ago, but, honestly, it seems like ancient times at this point. The (or my?) world changed a lot in the past decade.

Even more impressive is that I won those games with a year old child. My first kid was born in late 2008. I left UP until this year shortly after, as I started my B.S. in computer science (finished in 18 months, and built a career for about 10 years and then retired off the career).

Total blur, but now I have free time to visit old haunts like this one.

Nhill, Rom hacks, typo.

Basically altering an original games code to create something new.

In the good ones IMHO they have entirely new games basically. The sky is the limit, not just changing sprites and text which is easier but you can change game concepts like adding more RPG aspects to a Mario game for example.

http://www.romhacking.net/

This is ome of the best sites Ive found.

I use a program called uni patcher that makes it easy.

For example I got a havk called The legend of Zelda, outlands.

So I DL. The patch (.ips file usually) you must also have the original rom in this case the legend of Zelda (.Nes file) and then pick a name for the combined patched file.

Now it should play on an emulator just fine.

Okay, cool. Yeah, I've heard good things about rom hacks. The closest I've gotten is the English translation of Seiken Densetu 3 on the SNES emulator. But I've heard of hacks on the old mario games and such. Looks interesting.

I personally have a fondness for action RPG games. Zelda, Faxanadu, Castlevania 2, Willow etc.

It doesn't have to be NES either they have rom hacks for pretty much every system. Some games are more suited to this. Pokemon for example has one of the largest communities and selections of games, its just really my cup of tea.

But anyone familiar with the basic concept of Pokemon realizes all of those games are the same basically so it wouldn't take long to hack a new version with new monsters and caves etc.

Or they also make demake games like being able to play Mario smash Bros, FF7 and resident evil on NES.

Many take good games and just fix them.Getting rid of glitches, making buyingnitems easier instead of 1 item at a time etc.

Or in the case of Castlevania 2, the original had hardly any boss battles, so in the rom hack "rebitten" (only for Windows in this rare case) each castle/mansion now has its own boss battle.

Here is YT clip showing off some of the better old style Zelda hacks.

Yup, English translation is a rom hack. Its how I got started, getting previously games only available in Japanese.

My daughter has recently got a switch and likes zelda, so I was thinking it would be cool to change sprites and the name and make it her own adventure named after her (she is 6)

I think the pokemon games have a good formula: here's a formulaic adventure where you prove yourself on the way with the 8 gym leaders (e.g. 8 times you fight Bowser if you don't warp in the original mario), and then actualize all your skills and collection against the final challenge. It's a good formula. The last time I made it through a pokemon game was 1999 with pokemon gold, as it gets pretty repetitive. But there's no denying they have a winning formula!

Smash bros on NES sounds interesting.

Smash Bros^ I think its based on one of the river city ransom series of games (they had sports games and beatemups)

And on Pokemon, Absolutley they have a good formula and games like that I think lend themselves better to rom hacks.

Zelda has a similar format, as does Mario. So its easier to take the framework of these formats and step by step alter it, add in new bad guys, take look/style of the game and make something new.

One of my wishes since I was a kid was to add multiplayer to certain games.Thats possible now.

Zelda for example has what I would consider 4 major retro classics.

Zelda 1 (NES)

Zelda 2, adventure of link-sidescrolling (NES)

Links awakening on Gameboy

Link to the past on SNES

They have major differences, more than most Pokemon games, but they still have a format.

You get a sword, then a boomerang and go through 8 dungeons where you get 1 new item and dedeat a boss to compete the level.

That new item often unlocks new parts of the game. IE the hammer will remove a boulder blocking your path.

These 4 games are easily mixed and mashed having the original game. With items from the later games.

But even the hacks keep the framework usually.Mabey you have more or less levels but from.a design perspective its a huge help.

Ive always wanted to make a Faxanadu sequel.Great game but a less defined format so it's IMO a bit tougher to develop but it can be more freeing.
