That’s weird though. I don’t think a white person would be allowed to play a black character. Imagine if they made a movie about Martin Luther King and if he was played by a white dude? lol

Paramount, Apparently if a white person does it it's cultural appropriation.

But they can style their hair like white people.Wear western clothes etc.

I mean I can't actually think of anything that could be considered CA against Whites. I mean Michael Jackson......

Superman isn't real, MLK was a historical person whose skin color was apparently, a key driver behind his activism. Superman comes from a made up planet and has X-ray vision. His skin color isn't important to the story.

Though, if they are gonna do this, then the Clarks better also be black. We don't need another movie where white people take care of a black child, Sandra Bullock already made that movie. Black superman better grown up in the hood, with all that trials and tribulations that carries.

Nimatzo, Black superman, fine Ghetto superman? blasphemy.

The fact that race had a role in MLKs advocacy means nothing in reality.Imagine a white actor playing George Washington Carved or Mansa Musa, same outrage.

Black Panther? could you imagine white lion? Semetic cougar?Asian fails mouse? hahaha

You can move beyond such things. You barely care if actors are Jewish anymore, or that we call females actors.

Cultural appropriation always has an element of power to it. The powerful appropriating even more of what is not theirs.

The reverse dynamic is called assimilation unless done with specific colour blind intent.

Moral of the story? Be more equal and problems go away.

"Nimatzo, Black superman, fine Ghetto superman? blasphemy."

I don't think someone like Ta-Nehisi coates is going to make black superman "ghetto". But his coming of age, should to be in that environment and not referring to his peers as "my niggas".

So, if they do something different with this, in the way I am saying, then maybe this will be good, but if the only aspect of Superman that is being changed, is his skin color and everything else is the same, then meh. I want earth people to be racist towards young superman. Go all the way or go home.

” Superman isn't real”

How do you know? He is real to me, and to many other kids.

Nimatzo, I'm, to me, Superman will always have grown up on a farm.

Thats what irked me about Gotham, yes they're coming from the movies, Martha and her pearls, Bruce sees the whole Speil....But he doesn't say "Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?"

I mean I get it, they play around with interpretations, and thus origin stories, but I dont have to like it.

#waitingforSuperman.

From comics to the big screen shouldn't be a difficult task. Skin pigment or cultural environment shouldn't create a problem with super hero's.

A creative writer should be able to create a superhero that appeared to everyone as the race of those who set eyes upon him/her. A major super power. Fiction is fiction and a hero is a hero because they do good things with their powers. All joking aside I don't care what color Superman is or isn't.

This one isn't a huge deal. There have been black Supermans from alternate universes; they'll probably choose Val-Zod or Calvin.

And he's an alien anyway. Better than an inexplicably black Johnny Storm while his sister is a blonde.

” All joking aside I don't care what color Superman is or isn't.”

Same here. But I’m thinking that they made him white and that they can’t change his race after wards. It’s just weird and confusing to change his skin color/race. It isn’t the original superman anymore if they do.

Same with Captain America from your link. He looks black on that picture, but from what I remember Captain America was white.

If they want to have a black super hero character I think they could create a new character.

It’s like if the would change the race of Winnie the Pooh all of a sudden, from a yellow bear to a black bear. It wouldn’t be Winnie anymore.

Forwyn, there actually are black and white twins IRL.

Obviously even rarer than twins, but requires less suspension of belief, than Ironman suits.

Superman is Kryptonian, black and white doesn’t even mean the same thing as on Earth on Krypton. There is a journey for black superman to make, experiencing racism, learning the truth about his actual heritage, and still deciding to help and protect humanity, despite our flaws.

What is the suspension of belief? It is an interesting concept.

Interstellar sex. Doesn't that sound better? Logically it doesn't make sense, but it sounds better. Interspecies sex makes me think of people having sex with dogs, pigs and goats.

So would you all be okay with if they made Winnie the Pooh a black bear? Would you still view him as Winnie then?

Winnie the pooh, isn't any specific color, he is teddy bear color. There is no other angle to winnie to pooh, that can be explored by changing his color. With superman there is and it fits the narrative already, superman suffers the fatal flaws and weakness of humanity and still decides to stick around and protect us.

Ok, I understand our desire to project our values and biases (I do to) onto everything, especially cultural expressions, but we have to stop and think, why am I feeling this way?

Maybe having children makes it easier, maybe it makes it harder, but I think I need to "let go" of superman a little bit, to be able to "give" him to my son.

Jergul

Thanks for the clarification, it was unclear where you were going with this :D

Nim,

” Winnie the pooh, isn't any specific color, he is teddy bear color”

If you look at pictures of Winnie the Pooh you can see that he has a color. It is orange/yellow. You can also not deny that there are black bears, brown bears, and white bears. So why not make Winnie the Pooh a black bear?
Nimatzo

Fri Mar 05 08:42:10
Why not? I am not saying we shouldn't, but his color is not only not relevant, it is not even the "color" we are talking about when talking about MLK and Superman being black. You are comparing apples to oranges, or rather black people to oranges :D

Winnie-the-Pooh is based on an actual stuffed animal the authors son owned as a boy so the color closely matches the toy.

Did a bit of reading and the toy was named after a black bear that was in the zoo at London.
