Utopia Talk / Politics / Musk in Miami

So apparently he may build tunnels under Miami....

As much as a Musk fan as I am, I currently live in an area with similar issues as Miami....

Mainly that the land is insanely difficult to build even basements due to the types of soil, flooding and sinkholes etc.

Tunnels seems.like.building castles on sand.

Yeah, I don't see this one happening, at least not under the city itself.

Also, we're still waiting on that NY-DC hyperloop.

Paramount, Of course.

You can have an underground structure built here, its just expensive because you need to have extra drainage, usually truck in more prefferable soil etc. Its all extra work and materials, probably easier to tunnel through though.

Sink holes can be troublesome too.

Tunnels in hurricane storm surge land.

Better build some nice pumps to dry em out after the storm.

Subsea. So tunnels under water, but not under ground for the most part.

I think both this tunnel stuff and Hyperloop are dead ends. Not that tunnels are stupid, but Musks take on tunnels is stupid. Let's make tunnels smaller (so they are cheap to make) for cars. That is not a cost efficient infrastructure for transporting people/stuff underground. We already figured this out 100 years, it's called a metro system.

A Mars solution.

Yes, there is that angle, but we already know how to dig tunnels and digging in LA will not be like digging on Mars. It is the business case here on earth, I don't see how that will work. It's not just the tunnels, the lifts, the ramps, everything in the infrastructure will be dimensioned after 1 car. This is a good chunk of how he (on paper) brings down the total cost and that is reducing the cost of digging, he makes the tunnels 1/4 of the size, or something like that to fit 1 car.

Nim, Its a rich tapestry.

Its not the same, but im sure plenty can carry over to Mars.

Now for the Vegas strip, I think the hyperloop is perfect. Im less certain about say, the east coast passage. It wpuldmbe great though if you could go from.NYC to DC in 30 mins.

Fla just seems a bad fit.

"We already figured this out 100 years, it's called a metro system."

You are just about the last person who I'd expect to be willing to ride public transit.

I'll give Wuhan flu this, it really exposed the folly of the effort by large cities to get rid of cars.

Anyway, Musk throws out wild ideas like this on occasion. No biggie, you just don't take him too seriously.

It only becomes serious when he starts throwing serious capital at the project.

The LV strip is a pretty bad place for something that needs to accelerate to and decelerate from supersonic speed. Not enough distance.

Rugian
Exactly, I don't begrudge anyone for having crazy ideas.

Nimatzo, To me it sounded like a good place to demonstrate it.

I'm not familiar enough with the science behind it to argue one way or the other about speed and distance.

You don't have to know anything besides baving a drivers license and familiar with driving a car. You accelerate and then you decelerate to a full stop, that distance becomes longer the faster you go. The same applies to any mode of transportation including the hyperloop.

Sub sea is not digging tunnels. Its making a surface tunnel system that has to withstand an adverse environoment.

I think its about getting public money to fund a project needed on Mars.

There are far-fetched ideas, and then there are sentiments that are fundamentally disgusting at an atomic level.

"So apparently he may build tunnels under Miami"

Most likely he is starting to turn Earth into a labyrinthine world, like Hyperion or Armaghast.
