What is the best?

A locked down economy and society:
- people are going to get sick and feel ill for a while and then get better again
- people are going to die
- business will die and shut down
- people will lose their jobs
- people will lose their homes
- people are going to get depressed
- men will beat their wifes and children
- people are going to committ suicide
+ less air pollution

Opening up the economy and society:
- more people are going to get sick and feel ill for a while and then get better again
- more people are going to die
+ people will work and make money
+ business will survive and make money
+ people can go back to whatever they were doing before; concerts, sports, etc.

Whatever his decision will be, it is going to hurt his ability to be re-elected. Open up the economy = many many people will die. Keep everything closed and locked down = people will die and business will die

I think this is a lose-lose situation for Trump. He might as well resign now and hand over the Whitehouse to the Democrats and let them make the decision and be hurt and lose the election in november, and then Trump can come back as a winner! lol

So if Trump has his way he'll have to establish death panels.

You think Trump will go down silently? He already said that the EPA would no longer enforce laws because of the Coronavirus, I shit you not. And he wrote an executive line saying that he wouldn't follow the guidelines for oversight on the $500 billion slush fund.

This guy will lie and cheat and do whatever it takes to get re-elected. And the thing is, he doesn't even like being president or have a plan to help anyone. It's just a way of keeping score vs Obama and also staying out of jail.

And 44% of the country will vote for him because the internet and fox news makes a massive majority of non-college educated whites vote against their own interests.

Its not really Trump's call. States decided how to handle the crisis. But he can make life very difficult for governors if he wants to.

Any relief relies on Federal support. No matter what option is chosen.

Paramount, Trump can decide quite a bit, especially in emergency situations. He is very fond of using executive orders.

That said this is an issue nations around the world will have to grapple with.

You are thinking all or nothing scenarios. That doesn't need to be and will not be the case. We can begin sending people back to work in some areas while keeping others shut down. This applies to geographic areas and business sectors. No need to just open everything up again all at once.

And jergul is correct. Most of these decisions will happen at the state level. States can decide when to allow people back to work and when to travel freely. The federal government might be needed to keep people in highly infected areas from traveling to other states that are more open. Not sure how that would work though.

Some silly and stupid things happening right now that isn't helping. A friend of mine that writes users manuals for Monoprice.com has been told to work from home but has to go into the office once a week for meetings. Kinda defeats the purpose. If people would quit acting like idiots this would go a lot better and be over much sooner.

I should elaborate a bit more. While Trump can supersede many state actions ( especially in emergency situations), in general we let the state's handle it most of it themselves as they obviously have better knowledge of there situation.

I'm sure the states rights crowd would love Trump trying to supercede them.

Hood, It depends on the situation. People tend to gice leaders more Lee way in emergency situations.

Hood, I understand your point, being they wouldn't bitch because it was Trump and or something they are in favor with.

My point is that even if it was say Obama in a similar dilemma I dont think there would be much fuss over it.

Now hypocrisy is when some* states rights groups will support federal bans on abortion at which point it goes to show some of them just want what they want and states rights is used as a cover.

Idk how many SRs supporters there really is anymore, I am a big supporter of SRs but often find myself alone on that.

Para
The latest a case in point. Trump was considering a quarantine of New York. After he was reality checked, he ordered the cdc to issue a "strong" travel advisory.

We foreigners tend to overestimate a president's power domestically because we are used to the widesweeping stuff he or she can do abroad.

Invade a country? Sure. Just remember to tell Congress within 50 days afterwards.

Stop car traffic to NY? Forget about it. A president does not have that power.
