So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!

There would be even less confirmed cases of coronaVirus if only the testing could have been slowed down even more.

We are going to have to bite the bullet on this one. Close to 60-80% penetration. 0.5% mortality. Over the next 3 years. We get a vaccine at some point (that probably will cause adult onset autism because that is one way the GOP can sharpen its edge). Corona-19 and its mutant decendants becomes just another flu...that will of course kill thousands every year.

That will be the outcome in 3500 universes of 10 000? Something like that.

But we are used to that.

I read that somone with the Corona virus shook the hands with a Republican who then shook Trump’s hands.

If Trump gets sick, will they shut down the White House?

A big question though is how someone with the Corona virus could get so close to Trump, the President of the United States.

So what if Trump got infected and if Trump infects the entire administration and all important military leaders and generals. Most of these people are pretty old. Trump is over 70. Aversge age of generals are like 50-60. That is pretty old too. What if they get severe pneumonia and needs to be put in a breathing machine.

What if North Korea or China decides to launch a couple of nukes then? lol

It is in times like this when the president needs a few doppelgangers. It was rumored that Saddam Hussein had over 50 doppelgangers. That is why it was so hard to find him, and when Saddam was on TV or showed himself in public, no one knew if it was the real Saddam or not.

The real Trump could likewise be put in a safe bunker at a secret location. A bunker that is safe against viruses, chem attacks and nuclear attacks, and his doppelgangers should be the acting president and take all the risks. So if something happens, then America can continue to be governed and continue to function.

That rumour emerged because Saddam kept on showing up in crowds who could have ripped him apart it wanted to.

So instead of admitting Saddam had a degree of personal courage and popularity in segments of Iraqi society, it was better to suggest the body doubles were moving about while Saddam hunkered down in a bunker.

MEANWHILE IN ITALY

Italy orders total lockdown over coronavirus

Measures first implemented in the north extended to whole country.

By SILVIA SCIORILLI BORRELLI 3/9/20, 9:51 PM CET
ROME — Italy has been put into total lockdown in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus.

In a press conference Monday evening, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced unprecedented measures limiting movement for 60 million Italians. The decision to extend the emergency measures put in place on Sunday for Lombardy and 14 other provinces at the epicenter of the outbreak came after a spike in infections over the last 24 hours. To date, over 7,800 people have tested positive for coronavirus and over 460 have died.

“We have no time to adapt, numbers tell us we have a spike in infections, people in intensive care and deaths,” he said. “Our habits must change right now.”

From Tuesday until April 3, Italians will only be allowed to leave their homes for urgent health and professional reasons, according to Conte. Schools and universities as well as public venues, including cinemas, theaters and gyms will remain shut. Professional sports events, including Serie A football matches, are also suspended.

This not gonna work. People will go out regardless. And people who are feeling sick will continue to go out, to travel, and to cough at other people.

Lol. Yesterday when they put Lombardy in quarantine, thousands of people boarded overcrowded trains, flights and buses, and headed south, bringing the Corona virus with them, so now the south of italy will have an outbreak too.

OK it is highly infective...

http://www...fficial-safe-distance-and-stay

The coronavirus that causes Covid-19 can linger in the air for at least 30 minutes and travel up to 4.5 metres – further than the “safe distance” advised by health authorities around the world, according to a study by a team of Chinese government epidemiologists.

The researchers also found that it can last for days on surfaces where respiratory droplets land, raising the risk of transmission if an unsuspecting person touches it and then rubs their face and hands.

The length of time it lasts on the surface depends on factors such as temperature and the type of surface, for example at around 37C (98F), it can survive for two to three days on glass, fabric, metal, plastic or paper.

These findings, from a group of official researchers from Hunan province investigating a cluster case, challenge the advice from health authorities around the world that people should remain apart at a “safe distance” of one to two metres (three to six and a half feet).

In that case, Trump definitely got the Corona from the people he shook hands with. We should keep a watch on if Trump coughs in the coming days. Then we will know for sure.

"challenge the advice from health authorities around the world that people should remain apart at a “safe distance” of one to two metres (three to six and a half feet)."

This is a common misunderstanding by the public. Maintaining a safe distance, washing your hands, etc. is all about lowering your odds of getting infected. It's not a guarantee.

Influenza is really no different, but the same guidelines are given.

Italy is extending its strict coronavirus quarantine measures, which include a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that people would only be permitted to travel for work or family emergencies.

He said the measures, which come into effect on Tuesday, were to defend the most fragile members of society.

Italy's coronavirus death toll jumped on Monday by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country after China.

Cases of the virus have been confirmed in all 20 Italian regions.

Italy has a warmer climate so the virus shouldn’t thrive as much there, right? But uet it does. While in Scotland who has a colder climate that suits the virus better, there is no outbreak.

Maybe because in Scotland they don’t drink wine, as the Italians do. In Scotland they drink whisky. So maybe a glas of whisky will kill the virus? Has anyone tested this yet?

Two opinions on that:

Pathogen appears to spread fastest at 8.72 degrees Celsius, so countries in colder climes should ‘adopt the strictest control measures’, according to researchers from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong province

But head of WHO’s health emergencies programme says it is ‘a false hope’ to think Covid-19 will just disappear like the flu

You get it under control by mass testing people and quarantining infected for 2 weeks. We have the ability to test millions. Once the rate of growth stabilizes and falls you have something manageable.

Make tests cheap, free, and fast to catch and mitigate all outbreaks and then resume life but with better fucking hygiene. Seriously most people are disgusting. Cover your mouths. Wash your hands. Jesus.

The threat this new disease is causing/will cause is the overwhelming of hospital systems - which will then cause negative impact to anyone else in need of other non-covid19 services. It's not the lethality of it per say, but the unrelenting contagious levels in a virgin population (humans).

Sure it only kills a small percent of people, usually older people. But you get 2 million older people sick at all at once, and your hospital establishment will be in shambles. Then every other medical need is slowed, and hampered causing an escalation of bad outcomes for patients and very difficult quality of life for health care workers.

The goal MUST be to keep the new serious infections slow enough to be accommodated in a full capacity way by the hospitals. That is why Italy imposed these rules, to slow the new infection rate.

It's almost a certainly each of our nations will face this as well. China and Korea already have and seem to be getting ahead of it/some semblance of control over the speed of new infection.

some justification for panic (a story from a doctor in Italy):

"
This is the English translation of a post of another ICU physician in Bergamo, Dr. Daniele Macchini. Read until the end "After much thought about whether and what to write about what is happening to us, I felt that silence was not responsible.

I will therefore try to convey to people far from our reality what we are living in Bergamo in these days of Covid-19 pandemic. I understand the need not to create panic, but when the message of the dangerousness of what is happening does not reach people I shudder.

I myself watched with some amazement the reorganization of the entire hospital in the past week, when our current enemy was still in the shadows: the wards slowly "emptied", elective activitieswere interrupted, intensive care were freed up to create as many beds as possible.

All this rapid transformation brought an atmosphere of silence and surreal emptiness to the corridors of the hospital that we did not yet understand, waiting for a war that was yet to begin and that many (including me) were not so sure would ever come with such ferocity.

I still remember my night call a week ago when I was waiting for the results of a swab. When I think about it, my anxiety over one possible case seems almost ridiculous and unjustified, now that I've seen what's happening. Well, the situation now is dramatic to say the least.

The war has literally exploded and battles are uninterrupted day and night. But now that need for beds has arrived in all its drama. One after the other the departments that had been emptied fill up at an impressive pace.

The boards with the names of the patients, of different colours depending on the operating unit, are now all red and instead of surgery you see the diagnosis, which is always the damned same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia.

Now, explain to me which flu virus causes such a rapid drama. [post continues comparing covid19 to flu, link below]. And while there are still people who boast of not being afraid by ignoring directions, protesting because their normal routine is"temporarily" put in crisis,

the epidemiological disaster is taking place. And there are no more surgeons, urologists, orthopedists, we are only doctors who suddenly become part of a single team to face this tsunami that has overwhelmed us.

Cases are multiplying, we arrive at a rate of 15-20 admissions per day all for the same reason. The results of the swabs now come one after the other: positive, positive, positive. Suddenly the E.R. is collapsing.

Reasons for the access always the same: fever and breathing difficulties, fever and cough, respiratory failure. Radiology reports always the same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia, bilateral interstitial pneumonia, bilateral interstitial pneumonia. All to be hospitalized.

Someone already to be intubated and go to intensive care. For others it's too late... Every ventilator becomes like gold: those in operating theatres that have now suspended their non-urgent activity become intensive care places that did not exist before.

The staff is exhausted. I saw the tiredness on faces that didn't know what it was despite the already exhausting workloads they had. I saw a solidarity of all of us, who never failed to go to our internist colleagues to ask "what can I do for you now?"

Doctors who move beds and transfer patients, who administer therapies instead of nurses. Nurses with tears in their eyes because we can't save everyone, and the vital parameters of several patients at the same time reveal an already marked destiny.

There are no more shifts, no more hours. Social life is suspended for us. We no longer see our families for fear of infecting them. Some of us have already become infected despite the protocols.

Some of our colleagues who are infected also have infected relatives and some of their relatives are already struggling between life and death. So be patient, you can't go to the theatre, museums or the gym. Try to have pity on the myriad of old people you could exterminate.

We just try to make ourselves useful. You should do the same: we influence the life and death of a few dozen people. You with yours, many more. Please share this message. We must spread the word to prevent what is happening here from happening all over Italy."

I finish by saying that I really don't understand this war on panic. The only reason I see is mask shortages, but there's no mask on sale anymore. We don't have a lot of studies, but is it panic really worse than neglect and carelessness during an epidemic of this sort?

Trump told aides he’s afraid journalists will try to purposefully contract coronavirus to give it to him on Air Force One, a person close to the administration told me.

The source also said Trump has asked the Secret Service to set up a screening program and bar anyone who has a cough from the White House grounds. “He’s definitely melting down over this,” the source said.

Holy shit. Still no testing.

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/03/coronavirus-testing-numbers/607714/

Nearly two weeks after the new coronavirus was first found to be spreading among Americans, the United States remains dangerously limited in its capacity to test people for the illness, an ongoing investigation from The Atlantic has found.

After surveying local data from across the country, we can only verify that 4,384 people have been tested for the coronavirus nationwide, as of today at 4 p.m. eastern. These data are as comprehensive a compilation of official statistics as currently possible.

******

Trump's surgeon general has been promising millions of tests for a week now.

I really feel this comes from the very top. Trump doesn't want any cases to be revealed and so he will let it spread in secret until it gets too bad and overwhelms our system.

” Nearly two weeks after the new coronavirus was first found to be spreading among Americans, the United States remains dangerously limited in its capacity to test people for the illness”

The US has no Universal Healthcare and many Americans are too poor to pay for a test. So people won’t be tested and that means that contagious people will run free and infect more people. Chances are that the US will be hit really hard. Hardest of them all. The US may end up looking like a 3rd world country in the way they handle this.

Researchers in Seattle repurposed a flu test and found community spread of coronavirus

From CNN's Jen Christensen, Ben Tinker & Arman Azad

A doctor in Seattle studying influenza hypothesized that the coronavirus had been spreading in Washington for days before anyone realized it, according to a New York Times report yesterday.

For weeks, states have raised concerns that there are not enough tests available, as international agencies like the World Health Organization warned that early testing and contact testing is paramount to halting the virus' spread.

According to the Times, Dr. Helen Y. Chu and her team, without government approval, re-purposed tests for influenza to instead look for coronavirus. The study found a positive test from a teen with no travel history to any area where there had been an outbreak, showing the coronavirus was spreading in the community earlier than officials thought.

Early this morning, the Seattle Flu Study tweeted a statement by Lead Principal Investigator Dr. Jay Shendure:

“Our researchers are deeply dedicated to keeping our community safe. In the face of this unprecedented health threat, there are times when we have all felt the need to move fast in an effort to save lives. We are actively working and have had good cooperation with local, state, and national health authorities on the response to COVID-19.
Our team is productively collaborating with state regulators and has identified a path forward that will allow us to continue testing. This collaboration will be crucial to helping us overcome the current challenge and putting in place a strong foundation for the future.”

==============

Wow. I would like to know how many people they tested at random, but it was in the 10s or 100ds, not 1000nds. Suggesting that more than 1 of 1000 have been infected in Washington State.

The same number for the US based on 13% of pop being 65+ is 2 million+ dead.

Things may get really scary in the US really soon.

Current US doubling rate is 3 days. Lets hope most of that is due to underreporting earlier.

It will reach the millions within 30 days if that had been the true number (I did not do the calculation and humans are notoriously bad at estimating exponential growth. But I feel 30 days is the ballpark for millions with a 3 day doubling rate and 1000 now).

It is tricky because the numbers do not get crazy big (relatively) until you hit 20. Then things get out of hand. If you start with 1 by the 20th time doubling you have hit 1 million and by the 30th you have 1 billion. The human intution does not scale well at all.

Highest jump ever: DE-CIX Frankfurt reaches 9.1 Tbps

Yesterday evening, DE-CIX Frankfurt reached a new all-time traffic peak of more than 9.1 Terabits per second! This is not only a new world record, this is also the highest jump in traffic we have ever had at DE-CIX. The all-time traffic peak DE-CIX Frankfurt reached two weeks ago was 8.3 Tbps, so peak traffic increased by 800 Gigabits per second.

Unusual time for a new peak

A mere two weeks ago, we said that we expected the 9 Terabits per second to happen more towards the end of the year, based on the traffic developments we saw in previous years. While streaming of live sports events, IOS updates, or new releases of online games (like yesterday evening: Call of Duty® Warzone) are likely to generate new traffic peaks at DE-CIX, traffic rhythm generally follows seasonal waves.

Whether it’s for exchanging information, streaming films, playing online games, or the exceptional situation people are currently experiencing with the COVID-19 virus, Internet usage is playing an ever-greater role. [...]

"Italy has already asked to activate the European Union Mechanism of Civil Protection for the supply of medical equipment for individual protection. But, unfortunately, not a single EU country responded to the Commission’s call. Only China responded bilaterally. Certainly, this is not a good sign of European solidarity."

How many interstate transfers from one state government to another has the US seen?

Some things are just not doable politically.

The core problem is no public management leaving less than 0 redudancy in healthcare systems (facilities were operating above manpower capacity even before the outbreak). Which would be fine, but there is also very little surge capacity.

So what happens is that priorities change. The increase in mortality for 2020 will be higher than the number of corona victims by a significant margin.

First death reported in Sweden, 70 year old male with some existing condition. We have a community spread now. I am actually quite worried, the Sweden health care system has been under pressure for some time, this is really bad timing.

A friend of a person at my job was confirmed to have Corona the other day. Shit is getting closer. I was afraid to breathe at work today. I mostly breathed through my nose and kept my mouth shut tight. Don’t know if that helps. I might start to work from home nedt week depending on how this is developing.

Universities will almost certainly start shutting down in much larger numbers over the next couple weeks to help spread out the burden on hospitals.

Spread for most coronavirus cases is through hands and touching face from what I have read. There is some evidence that it spreads from being in close proximity in buses and mass transit. I believe the latest chinese report says it can spread up to 4.5 meters from an infected person and can last for days on surfaces even in hot weather. I’d source better but its UP so whatever. Stay safe but probably make sure all the immunocompromised or old people in your life are quarantined and have enough supplies to hunker down for a while.

tbh sam, their original plan was to not have fans at the games which would make for extremely fucking boring tv. imagine their guys running up and down the court with just the sound of a ball bouncing and sneakers squeaking heard.

anyways, i live near LA which has homeless camps and ive recently started coaching high school water polo and swim on the side so i am pretty confident ill get sick but will be fine. more worried about my mom getting it, she is in the age range where it is a fatal flu.

also, tom hanks is also in the age range and also has diabetes. so, yeah, he legit might die.

not sure what percentage his fatality is. 20 percent? not sure how much of a factor diabetes ends up being. but he also has a shit ton of money and access to top of the line medicine.
