rank | Sun Aug 25 01:46:03 2019 Holy fuck. Why was I not warned about this? Like, who wasn't warned about this? You could not be warned enough. So let me warn you. This little mother fucker had his second birthday and we decided to invite the family this year. And my extended family is increasing. And my son was showered in expensive gifts. Shit I only dreamed of when I was growing up. An electric car ffs, a custom made book with him and his little cousins name as the characters on an adventure. A tricycle, an excavator , a bigger excavator he can excavate with. The list is too long to bore you with. And he was happy and we were all doey eyed looking at his smiles all day. Then came bedtime. Have you ever wanted to kill your child? Like seriously, Bart Simpson strangle them? It is a strange feeling. I have been having those very often lately. They say it is a passing phase, soon you will have meaningful exchanges. He can sorta count :) Watching a human grow interesting thing to watch, they learn so quickly and when he isn't being an asshole, he is quite funny. He is intelligent enough now to laugh at my farts. You could never train a dog to do that. |

rank | Sun Aug 25 10:55:30 2019 Have safe havens. For my kids, a lap with the child facing chest worked fine. But some kids need more protection from overstimulation. Just have a plan no matter where you are for where you and the kid should go if the world suddenly becomes too much. A huge family party with the kid being the center of attention getting tons of things seems like a nightmare. You can also stage out the gift opening. One present at a time until the kid gets tired of it, then remove it completely and give a new gift. Don't strangle the kid. It is frowned on. |

rank | Sun Aug 25 12:37:07 2019 Too many gifts. A huge cardboard box would be a lot more fun for him and any other kids around the same age. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid. All the deluge of people is more for the older people. Don't mean shit to a two year old. Most kids that age might pick out one toy they connect with. Let them pick it out and be content. You really aren't trying to please him. All the adults are trying to do is impress each other. |

rank | Sun Aug 25 16:43:40 2019 ”A huge cardboard box would be a lot more fun” Yup. With a cardboard box, a knife and duct tape, he could build his own toy house. And then when he wants to be left alone he could just crawl in there. |

rank | Sun Aug 25 17:37:44 2019 put a 2 yr. old in a room with a bunch of expensive toys and a few big cardboard boxes and then just stand back and watch. |

rank | Sun Aug 25 17:53:37 2019 Yup, it's a strange/freaky realization as a parent when you realize you have become familiar enough with frustrations of small children to understand how those horrific child abuse stories can spiral out of control to that level. Also I'm equally amazed how there are 0 times I corporal punished my kids that I don't feel bad about now. I don't think it really taught them anything besides to be sneakier next time, and I'd love the chance to go back in time and give those little kids some time alone to calm down and then a big hug and talk later, instead of a spanking in the moment of parent anger/asshole kid behavior. |

rank | Tue Aug 27 23:34:21 2019 I am amazed that there are more than 0 times you have corporal punished your kids. Its been illegal here since 1972. I did however violently break the eldest one's cell phone once. So I agree with the sentiment. |

rank | Tue Aug 27 23:38:21 2019 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_corporal_punishment_laws It became illegal in South Sudan in 2011. Food for thought? |

rank | Tue Aug 27 23:58:50 2019 The child marriage rate in SS is 52%, they're expected to grow up fast. |
jergul
rank | Wed Aug 28 00:44:53 2019 The legal age for that is 18. "Child Marriage in South Sudan is commonly seem in rural parts of the country and not in urban areas" Rural folk, eh? |

rank | Wed Aug 28 00:47:55 2019 And then I googled child marriages in the USA. Ouch! |

rank | Wed Aug 28 06:52:19 2019 Forwyn The simple fact that it is legal is stunning. In the same way that corporal punishment is legal. Wow. 3rd world shithole, much? |
Forwyn
rank | Wed Aug 28 06:59:08 2019 I know, much more civilized to have broad continent-wide supranational regulations with virtually zero Constitutional restrictions on such powers |
jergul
rank | Wed Aug 28 08:34:43 2019 Yah, the 1977 emergency powers act is a hell of a loophole in you checks and balances system. |
Forwyn
rank | Wed Aug 28 17:55:08 2019 Which still isn't a rebuttal to the fact that states have their own laws, and a law in California doesn't reflect on Utah, and vice versa. Our shithole has pretty much ignored enumerated powers for a couple generations, but a federal corporal punishment law would still be a pretty hard sell. |
jergul
rank | Wed Aug 28 18:48:28 2019 Feel free to name states where corporal punishment is illegal. |
Forwyn
rank | Wed Aug 28 19:19:43 2019 In the home? We're not a full-stop nanny state shithole, yet. That said, visible bruising or other injuries will likely get you a call from CPS. "31 states and the District of Columbia have banned corporal punishment in public schools, though in some of these there is no explicit prohibition. Corporal punishment is also unlawful in private schools in Iowa and New Jersey." |
