A ban on adverts featuring "harmful gender stereotypes" or those which are likely to cause "serious or widespread offence" has come into force.

The ban covers scenarios such as a man with his feet up while a woman cleans, or a woman failing to park a car.

The UK's advertising watchdog introduced the ban because it found some portrayals could play a part in "limiting people's potential".

It said it was pleased with how advertisers had responded.

The new rule follows a review of gender stereotyping in adverts by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) - the organisation that administers the UK Advertising Codes, which cover both broadcast and non-broadcast adverts, including online and social media.

”The ban covers scenarios such as a man with his feet up while a woman cleans, or a woman failing to park a car.”

So basically you can no longer show a man together with a woman who is cleaning, unless the man also is cleaning?

And you can no longer show a woman or a man who is failing at something, because it limits people’s potential?

I have not said that I’m against this ban or not. I’m just checking to see if I have understood the ban correct :P

The ban may look a bit dumb at first, but if you think about it – stereotyping is harmful. We are all individuals and therefore we should not assume that women cleans while men are lazy with their feet up.

This may hurt men in the long run if people stereotypes men and assume that men in general are lazy. Or that cleaning is something that a woman do. Men who grows up and lives as singles may then not clean their own house and they will end up living in dirt because no one taught them that it is okay to clean. So when they invite a woman to their house she is gonna run away because she sees a boy who can’t take care of himself or his house. This may be why so many men becomes Incels. They can’t get a woman because they are too lazy to make their bed or to do some general cleaning.

Who cares. On one side, the extremely-PC is annoying. On the other side, men's rights activists get so triggered by stupid shit.

Both sides are dumbasses and I am indifferent to whether either side gets their way.

But women do most of the house work and they suck at parking. Is media now not allowed to portray reality? Can my niggaz in da hood still rap about their reality, or are they perpetuating ”harmful stereotypes” about niggaz in da hood?

Not all women suck at parking. And if adverts didn't have a long history of stereotyping women and men, then maybe household work would be more even distributed among women and men today.

Rap should probably be banned. It is full of sexism and violence.

Small children who gets exposed to rap may start to think that violence and sexism is okay. It basically teaches/encourages children how to be criminals and to not respect women.

Maybe we can't ban rap, but why can't they rap about other things? Their reality must contain more things than drugs, guns, gangs, bitches and hoes. Don't they eat breakfast? Dinner? Don't they play basketball? They could rap about that instead.

Seems to be very british. Non-compliance is punished by strongly worded letters requesting advertisers mend their ways.

"Non-compliant online advertisers
We expect all advertising online to be legal, decent, honest and truthful. Here we list those who continue to make claims on their online sites that do not stick to the rules despite repeated requests for changes."

I tried reading their site abit and it looks like a regulation based one, not sure if there are any fines involved. The analog in Sweden is a voluntary thing, you have to join the agency and pay a fee and then follow their rules. If you don't join, they sometimes whine publically about it.

If this is something similair it just one more organization to ignore, not really a big deal.

Nim:

In this case I think there is only one body, but it is pretty toothless - its guidance and code-of conduct stuff. Actual laws on false advertising etc. exist.

In general, I'm not particularly opposed to this - seeing how insidious the effect of stereotyping in adds can be on kids expectations raising my own.

Pretty hard to define in a set of rules - it's more "don't be a dick" kind of thing. So having toothless watchdog organisations to thrash out with advertisers what acceptability looks like is no bad thing.
