Fox GLOBE CORRESPONDENT JULY 15, 2018 WEYMOUTH — A Weymouth police officer and a local woman were shot and killed Sunday morning by a suspect who allegedly stole the officer’s gun, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s office. Officer Michael Chesna, 42, died in the line of duty, and a local woman was shot and killed in her home by guess the race, 20, according to the district attorney. The suspect is expected to be arraigned Monday on two counts of homicide, Norfolk Assistant District Attorney Greg Connor said during a press conference at Weymouth police headquarters on Sunday afternoon. At about 7:32 a.m., Weymouth police were responding to a report of an erratic driver in the area of South Shore Hospital, Connor said. There was a single car accident in the area, and the driver fled the scene on foot. Weymouth police, including Chesna, began a search for the driver. Chesna found the suspect, later identified as guess the race, vandalizing a home on Burton Terrace. Chesna “exited his vehicle, he drew his firearm and commanded this man to stop,” Connor said. The suspect is believed to have attacked Chesna with a large stone and struck him in the head. Chesna fell to the ground. “the suspect then retrieved Officer Chesna’s firearm [and] discharged it several times in his head and chest,” Connor said. Additional officers responded to the scene and returned fire, and officials believe the suspect was struck once in a leg below the knee, Connor said. At that point, a foot chase began in the area of Burton Terrace during which the suspect “maintained control” of Chesna’s weapon, Connor said. “During the foot chase through the yards of Burton Terrace, it is believed the suspect discharged Officer Chesna’s firearm an additional three times, striking a local resident in her home” and killed her, Connor said. Investigators have not released her name. Connor said officials would not answer questions during the press conference. The suspect was later apprehended and taken to South Shore Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Connor said it was unclear Sunday afternoon if Lopes would be arraigned in court or the hospital. The suspect is currently in police custody, he said. Weymouth police Chief Richard Grimes said Chesna was a family man who leaves behind a wife and two children, ages 4 and 9. Grimes hired Chesna, and Monday would have been Chesna’s 6th anniversary with the Weymouth police, Grimes said. Chesna was an Army veteran, and Grimes said he spoke with Chesna’s mother Sunday morning. Grimes said she told him Chesna joined the Army to “help open the doors” to get a job with Weymouth police. Chesna worked the midnight to 8 a.m. shift with Weymouth police’s traffic division. “He was just a great family man, he was a great officer,” Grimes said, describing him as a man with a “great attitude.” “He was one of those people who truly sought this job, was fortunate enough to get it, and very much appreciated it,” Grimes said. “And we very much appreciated his service to the Weymouth Police Department.” The shooting rocked a residential neighborhood on what was a quiet Sunday morning. ------- Got tired of editing so cut it short.
