If the goal is to completely scuttle NAFTA, seems like a solid plan

If they suspend patents then where are they going to buy their drugs.

From Canadian companies that make it? The whole point is now anyone can make that drug on Canadian soil

I thought Canada bought all of their drugs from American companies at hugely discounted prices.

Cthulhu:

No its not.

Parents are granted by the state to encourage publication and thus replication and dissemination of innovations. The reward for documenting and publishing is the monopoly.

Every state has its own patent system, but part of free trade is cross recognition of patents. Otherwise people copy ideas patented in one jurisdiction outside that jurisdiction and export products back to it.

However, if Trump wants to rip up free trade, why would Canada have an incentive to recognise a us patent?

US drug makers should seek patents in Canada and produce there for that market.

Nah, they buy it at a cost negotiated with the strength of aggregated demand.

You pay grossly over the odds because you are wedded to the idea free market means bending over for big companies.

If the US adopted single payer, then your prices would go down. If there was genuine cross subsidy, everyone else's prices would go up slightly.

The fact you are intent on screwing yourselves over doesn't mean everyone else should too.

Not only that, American drug companies spend ~20% of their revenue on research. Everything else is lobbying and advertisement... Advertisement of prescribed drugs is very controlled and lobbying wouldn't get drug companies much in Canada...

Americans are getting screwed because they have to pay for that bullshit.
