Anyone know why Linux has such a hard-on for the login password, or if it's even possible to remove the password prompt from mint 18.2?

Kill yourself. It not your only option but it's obviously the best.

Ubuntu optionally allows for logging in without a password, so Mint as a downstream distro should expose the same option in about the same place unless they've gone out of their way to disable it.

Here's how you would do it in Ubuntu 17.10: https://websiteforstudents.com/setup-ubuntu-17-10-desktop-log-automatically/

If you're gonna make that security trade-off don't put anything on that computer that you would't mind every Tom, Dick and Harry accessing though.
