As such, cost of housing skyrockets due to increasing demand (through quality jobs) and increased spending ability of those who are imported (not illegals, just from other locations) to fill those higher paying jobs. But either way, San Fran needs a serious readjustment in their housing prices, as the cost of living makes generally decent salaries by US average standards practically unlivable in the bay. When will the employers buy up old buildings and subdivide the spaces into closet size apartments to house their help? Reverting back to the Company town days of yore. What effect did that have on rents? They skyrocketed, since residential development is primarily luxury units. High-rises dont really do anything to relieve the pressure on mid- to lower-class supply or rents, they just provide great investment opportunities for Russian oligarchs. Short of a return to the era of urban renewal (which no one wants), the economics of residential development simply don't favor the non-wealthy.
