This could totally change to UN to MAGA:

(a) Prohibition.—United States assistance may not be provided to a country that opposed the position of the United States in the United Nations.

Another excellent idea that is long past due.

As vote-buying goes, this is pretty overt.

Why does this need to be a law though? This seems to be the sort of things that falls firmly in the Presidents diplomacy power.

ep, Tell you what.

Next election please make a really huge donation to the candidate that you really do not want to win. The more you hate them and their agenda the better.

Same thing.

Aeros, a lot of things are understood, but not always followed.

Fair enough. But unconstitutional under any circumstances where aid is given through bilateral treaties.

Treaties being the highest law of the land.

Sorry seb. I was a bit overethusiastic on deleting multiple posts.

jergul, So you would just send aid to NK just because their people need it?

Is the US obligated by treaty to send aid to NK?

Quite the pandoras box that Trump now has opened. First order thinking rules the world. What are the next quarter job numbers? Re-election is soon back as a factor, better rush out all those shitty policies and laws! And around we go.

I think they are just talking foreign aid.

Of course, if there is a treaty they are bound by it. Are we bound by treaty to aid Mexico against the cartels?

It's like the sanctuary cities question that is moving through the courts now.

HotRod:

Is this a behaviour the US really wants to see globally?

Linking votes with aid means in international fora you are legitimizing the idea that for someone to vote for a position the US holds, what matters is whether the US has paid them for the vote rather than whether the principle is right or not. So the next time you want to organise sanctions, every one will have their cap out to see who throws some coins in it.

China is far more willing to outbribe you and has less constraints on spending it's budgets this way.

This severely weakens US diplomacy, not strengthens it.

Seb,

Congress' sole override of an Obama veto was for legislation that makes it legal to sue foreign governments for terrorism. Before that, both the US and the UK repeatedly ignored or abused international law to overthrow hostile governments in Iraq and Libya.

Setting examples that could eventually blow back on us is what we do bro.

I still do not see the virtue in supporting those who hate us or despise our ideals.

Hell, I even hated to see us buy their oil.
