Got to hand it to these guys, they are progressing quickly into a space power with abilities matching the most advanced government agencies around the world.

"with abilities matching the most advanced government agencies around the world."

Not surprising, since they are getting government funding to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.

They've flown well over 50% commercial flights this year.

Yeah, but those government contracts account for the bulk of their revenue. A billion dollars of revenue of which 700 million came from the Government.

Tesla almost folded in 2009 when Mask run out of cash, saved by the DoE loans. There is no SpaceX without NASA. And mask, to his credit, never peddled the "pure innovative capitalist" myth

Lets be real here. No space agency exists without massive governmental investment. The fact that SpaceX is doing it for so much less money compared to others is really what the true innovation is.

Which is why it's been asinine when people claim(ed) that nasa is done for because private business is taking over. No, private business isn't taking over, they're just evolving the business model of providing launch services to the government.

In a way akin to when the old Portuguese, Spanish, and English companies started becoming massive fleet powers moving stuff around the world across oceans for private profit.

Before that everything long journey ship related was crown sanctioned/military type endeavors.

But the utter commonality of ocean commerce and travel didn't become so until private companies got involved heavily.

Spacex is not an epic leap by itself. By being leaner with young competant decision makers, they are about twice as efficient as a boeing or a lockheed, and far more effecient than a government sebbed clusterfuck like nasa.

The willingness of tech money to get behind space travel is the exciting part.

NASA isn't the problem. Congressional allocations if funds are. NASA does a pretty good job at their shit. They may take the high quality, expensive route on things (see: rovers on Mars sauntering around well past their expected lifetime), but it's good shit. The overly expensive for no fucking reason stuff is Congress getting their hands into the pie.

Better if the cry had come before New Year's. Disgraced Executive Editor Lex Haris ran CNNMoney up until then.
