The fact that SpaceX is doing it for so much less money compared to others is really what the true innovation is. Which is why it's been asinine when people claim(ed) that nasa is done for because private business is taking over. No, private business isn't taking over, they're just evolving the business model of providing launch services to the government.

Before that everything long journey ship related was crown sanctioned/military type endeavors. But the utter commonality of ocean commerce and travel didn't become so until private companies got involved heavily.
