WTF is Surstromming?

Fermented fish.

It was a way to preserve food back in the days. The bacteria used to ferment it completely and utterly destroys any chance dangerous pathogens might have to infect the fish.

Having said that, it is also utterly disgusting. It smells like a dangerous gas leak.

Here is a personal story:
Back in the university days I worked week ends as security on buses. Riding along in the bus (biogas driven) I started smelling something fishy (hue hue). Passangers getting into the bus at every bus stop pointed this out. Busdriver man was smelling it, so I started walking around the bus trying to pinpoint where the smell was coming from.

Two eldery couples smiling and giggling, told me, "if you are wondering what the smell is, it is us, we had surströmming earlier".

Yes it is that bad. The odor from their mouths made us think, maybe the bus is leaking gas!

I have never tasted it. But my grand parents did, at our summer house in the country side. I honestly ran away when they opened the can. The smell of it forced me to run. People who has tasted say it tastes netter than it smells, but I'm not sure if I beleive it.

Anyways... surströmming is an old Swedish tradition. Anyone who wants to be a swede and remain in this country must eat surströmming.
