Genuinely surprised they dropped him, his rstings weren't going down, presumably they could have waited out the controversy for a month or two and then play it off like nothing was amiss.

The Murdoch sons are purging Fox of its conservatives as part of their scheme to make the upcoming Fox-Sky conglomeration palatable to a global audience. So not entirely surprising.

media barons apparently have higher standards than the president of the united states, who said that Bill has done nothing wrong. Now, granted, Donald as usual did not base his defence on any facts that he knows, but still.

Murdoch was very unhappy that Fox News did not follow his instructions to shill for Ted Cruz or Jeb, so the purge is ongoing. They took their orders from Roger Ailes like good soldiers, but perhaps did not realize Ailes had gone rogue. Now anyone involved with Ailes and the Trump show are going to be kicked out.

Hannity is next.

Rupert wanted him to stay, it was that limp wristed environmentalist hippie James that tried (and now succeeded) in dumping him. There goes Fox's prime time wall of Rupert-appointed pro-Trumpers.

And yeah, Hannity's future is probably not going to be great under James and Lackland. Tucker Carlson might be better off if he toes the line, but who knows.

"presumably they could have waited out the controversy for a month or two and then play it off like nothing was amiss."

The problem is that this wasn't a month or two problem. O'Reilly appears to be a serial sexual harasser. He's had issues going back years, and the women just keep coming ... which is not a surprise when you're paying out settlements.

Fox did pay $13 million to settle with just 5 women. So if you add it to Bill's hefty annual salary, maybe the ratings were just not enough to justify all the bad PR

Liberals everywhere are idiots, every bit as much as the conservative buffoons getting their comeuppance at Fox currently.

Both far ends of the spectrum show an amazing ability to self destruct.

Hannity is not going anywhere, as long as ratings are ok. It is not like Murdocks found out about OReilly harassment, were horrified and decided to fire Bill. No, Murdocks knew for a long time about claims, settlements, etc. It is only when all the shit leaked, and horrible PR ensued, then they were forced to act. If this was still under wraps, Bill would be in air forever
Im better then you

Over 60 sponsors left Reilly why waste a prime-time slot with a show that no one wants to be associated with?

Cable TV in General is a declining business.

Why the hell do people still own TVs?

Because they don't want to use a computer monitor to watch netflix/sports?

I feel sorry for Hot Rod. His brain will literally implode under the weight of it's own stupidity now that he can no longer parrot Bill O'Reilly's talking points

Dickbrain, I never was a big O'Reilly fan. He was OK so I watched him sometimes.

I have a feeling they are going to have an even better line up what with The Five moving to primetime.

Hey, the argument for Preemptive self defense is used by cops in America all the time, so its understandable.

Now let's see if he will be content to retire with his many millions.
Or will he decide to run for office. I'm sure he could get elected in any number of Red States that value a free swinging dick.

Doesn't matter if your ratings are high if the advertisers have left.

No way to monetise his ratings.

You realise that Fox isn't driven by ideological commitment to the right?

It's driven by an ideological commitment to money. The commitment to the right comes from ditching things like journalistic integrity that distract other media outfits from achieving outstanding profit margins.

The apparent political ideology is just branding to capture a specific market segment.

Once you have the eyeballs, you can put ads in front of them and monetise.
