Have they ever dropped one of these before outside of testing?

Very irresponsible. How many civilians, women and children did the US kill now?

"Have they ever dropped one of these before outside of testing?"

No.

"Very irresponsible. How many civilians, women and children did the US kill now?"

I'd be surprised if they dropped it on anyone. More likely it was done to intimidate the locals so they'd stop supporting the enemy.

IS in Afghanistan:

"IS struggled to build a wide political base and the indigenous support it expected in Afghanistan. Instead, it made enemies of almost everyone, including the Afghan Taliban."

"it has largely been eliminated from southern and western Afghanistan by the Afghan Taliban and military operations conducted by Afghan and US/Nato forces."

"Estimates about IS's numerical strength inside Afghanistan vary, ranging from 1,000 to 5,000."

An extremely low yield nuke.

As in .011kt

It's more nuclear firecracker than nuclear bomb.

afghani muslims are too stupid to have a war with anyone, they don't even know which side they're on - give them a machine gun, an opium pipe and some monkey bars to swing from, then they'll start shooting each other because they've got nothing better to do.

It weighs 11 tons with 21,000 pounds of explosives in it.

It explodes above ground and has a blast radius of one mile. The cloud rises 10,000 feet.

ISIS was using a network of caves to move men and supplies back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The concussion from the bomb would have collapsed most of the caves. Anyone in them was either dead or trying to dig their way out.

"It explodes above ground and has a blast radius of one mile."

Nowhere close to a mile. Not even a 1/3 of a mile.

800 meters of destruction. Much more powerful than the MOAB, if murder's 0.011kt is accurate.

That's a different ball of wax. That thing flattened buildings out to 800m ... I'm working off the radius for 1 psi of overpressure, at which point the likelihood of significant injury is very low.

The math is indisputable. The defintion of "blast radius" is subjective, but once you define blast zone the math is definitive. Murder is correct.

Pilz is also correct about that halifax ship. was a mighty blast, much closer to hiroshima than to moab. You are talking about a full frieghter with 1000s of tons of ammo.

"Within a few hundred feet of the apparent blast site, leaves remained intact on trees, belying initial expectations that the explosion may have sent a destructive blast wave for up to a mile."

so another failure?
murder

Sun Apr 23 13:21:46

Not necessarily. Odds are that bodies were taken away and disposed of by now ... if there were any.

But personally I've always believed that this was dropped just to make a big bang and intimidate the locals and/or N.Korea, not to kill some terrorists.

The Children

so it is nother failure.

murder
Member
Sun Apr 23 13:32:13

Well it didn't seem to intimidate N.Korea, so if that was the goal ... yes, another failure.

I have no idea if the locals were intimidated.

No crater and a relatively modest blast radius?

Its almost like murder and sam predicted exactly that.
