Utopia Talk / Politics / No flights to Israel
Asgard
Member | Tue Jul 22 21:36:57 All American and European airliners stopped flying to Israel due to fear of rocket attacks, as one hit close to the airport. I wonder how come flights to places where commercial airliners are not only targeted directly, but actually are actually killed by SAMs, like Ukraine, draw no such decisions. |

Member | Tue Jul 22 22:22:41 Does Israel only have one Intl airport? I've heard its only in tel Aviv. |

Member | Tue Jul 22 22:24:57 I imagine you could fly to Jordan and drive. Maybe even Beirut if you felt lucky. |
Aeros
Member | Tue Jul 22 22:27:56 There has not been an attack on Beirut Airport in years. That would be fine, but you would have to cross the UN Demarcation line into North Israel. Honestly, the only stable crossing point would be from Egypt or Jordan. Also, I think this is more of a backhanded sanction against Israel rather then an actual declared sanction. |

Member | Tue Jul 22 22:31:21 Its not the Beirut airport I would worry about, but the drive through Hezbollah controlled areas. |
Aeros
Member | Tue Jul 22 22:38:28 Hence my point about crossing the UN Demarcation line. |

iChihuaha | Tue Jul 22 23:07:33 Why would you worry about Hezbollah? Do they have a history of killing/kidnapping western tourists? |
Asgard
Member | Tue Jul 22 23:12:21 Yes. They do. Not to mention history of attacking UN pussy keepers. |

Member | Tue Jul 22 23:12:52 Things sometimes blow up in Lebanon and Hezbollah is usually responsible. Plus Sunnis pissed at the Assad alliance are blowing things up. Plus the general anti us/Israel sentiment. I can't think of any Hezbollah kidnappings but its still not a good idea to tempt fate. |

Member | Tue Jul 22 23:16:09 Its like all those American tourists who go to North Korea. Most get through just fine, until dear leader decides he needs more international aid. |

iChihuaha | Wed Jul 23 00:58:56 I have no information on this. I know of the hostages in the 80's. Generally as a westerner you are safe in Shia areas. No beheadings or summary executions. |
Aeros
Member | Wed Jul 23 01:27:41 Yeah, but the Shia areas are different from the border itself. It is still a UN administered black line, which incidentally, both Israel and Hamas have proven to be quite willing to attack each other across. The only way across the border into northern Israel is first clearing Hamas checkpoints, then the United Nations, and then the IDF. Its a huge hassle with no guarantees of passage. |
Aeros
Member | Wed Jul 23 01:28:33 Lebanon itself does not control the border with Israel. Which is reason enough to not try and cross into Israel that way. |
Nimatzo
iChihuaha | Wed Jul 23 02:09:50 You shouldn't cross borders between any two country that are at conflict. Has nothing to do with Hezbollah. |
Nimatzo
iChihuaha | Wed Jul 23 02:14:21 I willing to bet that Israel has "unlawfully" detained more westerners than Hezbollah has. |

Member | Wed Jul 23 04:24:17 Israel ensures that it is safe to land in Tel-Aviv airport. If it is, then the rockets can not be that dangerous after all. If the rockets are as dangerous as Israel has said, then why do they want Americans and Europeans to go to Israel and Tel-Aviv? Does Israel want to use them as human shields? |
Paramount
Member | Wed Jul 23 05:09:26 Israel: Gaza rockets are endangering our civilians. Airlines: Stop all flights to/from Tel Aviv. Israel: No no these Gaza rockets are harmless! |

Member | Wed Jul 23 05:18:16 Former N.Y mayor Mike Bloomberg is heeding Netanyahu's call, and will be going to Tel-Aviv to act as a human shield: @MikeBloomberg: This evening I will be flying on El Al to Tel Aviv to demonstrate that it is safe to fly in and out of Israel http://twitter.com/mikebloomberg/status/491746221107974145 |

iChihuaha | Wed Jul 23 05:28:06 Israel can't make up it's mind with regards to the rockets. They are dangerous enough to kill 600 people in an attempt to stop them, but not dangerous enough to hurt anyone they are being aimed at. |

I wrote here several times about the Lebanon war in 2004 where 44 civilians died because of these rockets. And may I be personal with you? In 2008, the first time a rocket hit the city I lived at, at the time, hit a house a mere 50 meters from my girlfriend's home. A neighborhood of small cottage houses made of fucking paper-thin wood. The house that was hit was blown apart. No one died, cause no one was there. I'll save you the terror she feels anytime a siren is heard even now. A day later, a young couple got whacked at their apartment at a top floor because they thought these rockets are harmless and didn't bother go down to the staircase for cover. I honestly do not understand this approach, treating these deadly rockets, as children's firecrackers. These are weapons, filled with small iron balls that spread everywhere and will kill anyone it its path. Yes, now we have iron dome, now there are barely any casualties, but these are still deadly weapons. |

Member | Wed Jul 23 10:07:13 I love this shit. Israel gets all indignant because airlines refuse to put their passengers at mortal risk ... yet every time rockets get fired from Gaza, alarms go off and Israelis run for shelters. |

Member | Wed Jul 23 10:20:44 To be fair though, a plane in the air is much less in danger of being struck with a ROCKET than stationary targets like buildings or public areas. If a plane was hit it would probably be a freak accident, rather than as a result of intentional targeting. |

And a jet would be in no less danger than any specific Israeli citizen or building. |

Yeah, but the rockets could hit the airport terminal, or airplanes as they are on the ground. Hopefully, this will happen to Bloomberg. |

Paramount
Member | Wed Jul 23 13:53:16 No, I just want a rocket to hit his airplane when he and everyone else is like 100 meter away from it or something. And maybe a shrapnel could hurt his leg or something a little bit, so he screams "damn, I should not have come to Tel-Aviv". |
