Utopia Talk / Politics / They Are Going To Tax *WHAT*.

I thought Obamacare was supposed to make health care, including prevention, cheaper.

So why are they going to slap a tax on flu vaccine that will probably cause millions of people not to get one?

Tax on flu vaccines helps fund national debt

January 8, 2013 | 2:55 pm

The new flu shot has a 40 percent failure rate, according to reports, but that's not stopping Uncle Sam from slapping a tax on it.

Legislation is moving through Congress to impose a 75-cent tax on new seasonal flu vaccines, as the government already does on existing vaccines. The tax money is used to fund the The Vaccine Injury Compensation Trust Fund which covers vaccine-related injury or death claims for covered vaccines.

Without the tax fund, officials said, drug makers wouldn't make new vaccines to replace older ones.

The website Speak With Authority noted that the fund has about $3.5 billion in it, but it's paid out only $2.5 billion in the last 25 years.

Says the site: "Although the taxes raised by the vaccine tax go into a 'Trust Fund,' this trust fund, like most government trust funds, is on paper only. According to the most recent report on the fund, November 2012, the balance in the fund is nearly $3.5 billion. Since the program's inception in 1988, the fund has paid out only $2.5 billion in 25 years for cases involving all vaccines, not just the flu vaccine. The balance in the fund could conceivably last another 25 years with no further tax revenue. The $3.5 billion balance, of course, is 'invested' in 'US Treasury Securities.' In other words, financing a portion of the $16.5 trillion national debt."

Not taking flu vaccines WILL make health care cheaper.

The tax is 75 cents. That's not going to make millions of people not get one and the article almost sounds like similar legislation already exists.

This has nothing to do with obamacare, stfu moron

Perhaps 'millions' is a bit of an exaggeration, but if this causes just one death isn't that too many?

What about the many companies that normally supply free shots for their employees, do you honestly think none of them will drop the program. I have a friend that I had to scream at for him to get a shot because he didn't want to spend the money. Do you think he is the only one that feels that way out of a hundred million?

Flu prevention has nothing to do with Obamacare?

Are you saying that Obamacare has nothing to do with health care? You may have a point there but, that is a different discussion.

Hf, if more people refuse the shot and have to be medicated and/or hospitalized.

Just look at the emergency rooms that have been inundated without the tax. To say that fewer people will visit the emergency room if fewer people refuse the shot makes zero sense.

Obama has been preaching for years that Obamacare will lower the cost of health care.

That is a contradiction, how do you explain it.

People that go to the hospital for the normal flu (no complications like pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, etc.) are morons and should be fined $25 for wasting the hospital's time and space.

75 cents is enough to stop millions from getting vaccinated?

They are free where I live and a lot of people don't get them.

I might have jumped the gun on making that statement. I do know that the health department does offer flu shots for free at various times as well as other places to get your business. Not all the time though.

75 cents is not going to stop people who are determined to get the shot to get the vaccine. If people are skeptical about vaccine, the carrot juice crowd wouldnt want it even if it is free.

OK, assuming you guys are right and it has no effect whatsoever if people get the shot or not.

Obama: “I Won’t Raise Taxes on Middle Class America”

Well, unless absolutely zero of the middle class pays for their shot out-of-pocket then we are on the verge of witnessing yet another lie by 'His Majesty The Lord High King'.

Free Markets Rod clearly does not understand demand elasticity.

He also clearly all of a sudden opposes flat taxes.

The flu shot is worthless. It doesn't even cover the current strain going around. All you gomers and your kids that used that anti-bacterial shit for the past 15 years are going to die. That was the real purpose of it - to lower your resistance to da bugs. Sorta like a low grade AIDS. Enjoy, dufuses.

I'd be completely OK with the CDC and whatnot advising healthy not-at-risk people to skip the shot.

Hey, aren't flu shots subsidized anyways? WTF sense does it make to tax something that is being subsidized?

I thought that was the one, and only, thing where Obama and I were in agreement.

I guess he is just lying again.

'Obama: “I Won’t Raise Taxes on Middle Class America”'

wasn't he talking about income taxes? sales tax (what this is) isn't income tax.

Taxes are taxes are taxes...

It is not a sales tax, Not sure what you would call it. Ad Valorum, Excise tax? Not really sure.

it is a tax on the sale of a shot. if the shot is not bought, the tax is not paid. it is exactly like a gas tax. those who drive the most pay more to take care of the roads. those who use flu shots the most pay to have these shots whipped up for them.

sales tax may not be the precise term, but it is a tax on sale nonetheless.

"Taxes are taxes are taxes..."

so next time you make the argument that many people never pay taxes, I can just cite them purchasing an item and say "taxes are taxes are taxes..." yes? good to know.

Of course you can, unless the topic at the time is specifically about income tax.
