The Overseer | Thu Aug 30 03:28:40 http://www...s/story-fn5fsgyc-1226461815433 FANTASISING you were Darth Vader used to be the only way you could be a cyborg. And please, the guy can barely breathe. But now Harvard University scientists have engineered the first examples of living tissue that's half-electronic, according to the journal Nature. While they’ve mostly just created cyborg rat cells, researchers have also succeeded in growing a 1.5cm cyborg human blood vessel. Basically, this new electronic material in the cells can be used to detect changes in cell structure. It could help doctors detect tumours one day. The electronics can't be used to control cells yet, but that's not outside the realm of possibility. Technological advances in this area could eventually be used to enhance humans, produce tiny robots and create prosthetics for human limbs. “Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends the electronics begin,” team leader Charles Lieber told the Harvard Gazette. Now get cracking on those lightsabers. Read more: http://www...s/story-fn5fsgyc-1226461815433#ixzz2514C6OSS |

Member | Thu Aug 30 07:10:20 Guys, all bullshit aside, do you know what this means? We are literally witnessing the evolution of the human race- the very early beginnings of the next leap forward. We will be Homo Sapien Technologus |

Member | Thu Aug 30 11:33:18 I am not too sure about that, because I dont think these material can be passed down from one generation to another. You can use these cells to make a organ to create a person when the technology is well developed, but this isnt a evolution if these materials arent inherited by the next generation through our DNA. |

Member | Thu Aug 30 11:34:28 It's depressing to know that we're going to die only a few decades before they figure out how to make people immortal. |

The Overseer | Thu Aug 30 11:35:32 I'm counting on another 50 years of medical advancements to help push me over the edge. |

Member | Thu Aug 30 11:36:42 I'm largely a fan of cyborgdom, but who can we trust to write the software? `It's depressing to know that we're going to die only a few decades before they figure out how to make people immortal.' You're going to die. Some of us are young and healthy and will easily blow past 120. |

iChihuaha | Thu Aug 30 11:37:04 This is a very troubling development. They can beat us in chess, trivia and math. Now we are years away from self-replication and AI is just around the bend. We are fucking fucked. |

Member | Thu Aug 30 11:39:17 They're slaves. We are their gods. They could surpass us in any and every conceivable metric, but as long as we hold the off switch, none of that matters. |

Yeah, but eventually some "cyborg equality" movement is going to develop, and one of the political parties will put it in their platform, and soon it will be illegal to discriminate against or subjugate AI beings. You know it'll happen at some point. |

Member | Thu Aug 30 11:43:07 A Battlestar Galactica type scenario seems far more likely. A hippie is a hippie only until he has to do his own work. |

Member | Thu Aug 30 11:57:06 Yeah, that's not a Terminator specific motif, jackass. And the way it was done in Terminator is far less likely than sexy fembots getting inside my head and making me fuck tables. |

iChihuaha | Thu Aug 30 12:59:19 You are saying Terminator is NOT a award winning documentary? OK? That is news to me. I think we need a second opinion?? |
