There are a couple of posters here that read genuine literature. As a budding professional intellectual, I thought I'd whack a little Dostoyevsky down during this summer. Everyone with the slightest aspirations of intellectual accomplishments needs to have read him. So Im reading Notes from Underground. Man, he's pretty boring. When it comes to writing the perfect sentences, sans a single unnecessary word throughout the book, as I was told he was a master of, Coetzee beats the crap out of him.

Feel free to discuss good authors. No shitty pop authors (Jean Auel etc)

You might want to check out 'Silas Marner' by George Elliot. It was her third novel and some consider it to be the best constructed novel ever.

It has been a good many years since Ireadit, but I remember thoroughly enjoying it.

The Holy Bible
The Constitution

And:

"An American Life: The Autobiography"

Ronald Reagan’s autobiography is a work of major historical importance. Here, in his own words, is the story of his life—public and private—told in a book both frank and compellingly readable.

Few presidents have accomplished more, or been so effective in changing the direction of government in ways that are both fundamental and lasting, than Ronald Reagan. Certainly no president has more dramatically raised the American spirit, or done so much to restore national strength and self-confidence.

Here, then, is a truly American success story—a great and inspiring one. From modest beginnings as the son of a shoe salesman in Tampico, Illinois, Ronald Reagan achieved first a distinguished career in Hollywood and then, as governor of California and as president of the most powerful nation in the world, a career of public service unique in our history.

Ronald Reagan’s account of that rise is told here with all the uncompromising candor, modesty, and wit that made him perhaps the most able communicator ever to occupy the White House, and also with the sense of drama of a gifted natural storyteller.

Notes from Underground isn't very interesting. Obviously you picked it because it was the shortest (and, to be fair, has quite a reputation). But it's more of a philosophical piece than a novel. Dostoevsky is great and a bona fide page-turner if you pick the right book. Crime and Punishment is excellent, and you should definitely read that one.

^ I was hoping someone might say that. Yeah, the crazy characters in C&P got me interested in him, but this is all fairly mundane. Think Ill have a look at C&P instead, before giving him up.

Then you would probably like 'Les Miserable' by Victor Hugo.

An interesting biography from the period is 'Naked Came I' by David Weiss based on the life of sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Dostoyevsky wrote that five pager about Jesus coming back to Earth and looking around during the Inquisition, right?

Not going to give any spoilers, but that one was fairly interesting.

"Someone recommend a good action/thriller movie"
I just watched this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haywire_%28film%29
It's from Soderbergh, so it's a little bit different than your typical action thriller. I rate it 7/10, was worth watching. I guess some people will hate it for lack of sfx and the music.

Yeah, I gave it 60 pages, but he seems to be repeating the same idea over and over again. I got it already: consciousness as a sort of sin. It's not even a novel idea today, though it would have been in his day. Ill try C&P.

Thanks for the movie tip.

Le livre s'appelle « Les Mis[é]rable[s] », pas « Les Miserable »; les deux mots du titre doivent être pluriels! C'était une erreur involontaire, mais si ça vous intéresse...
