This might be a bit of a stretch for some of you but it's a socio/psycholical fact that when a group of men call each other the same established derogatory names for 10-12 years it's subtly an expression of bonding and even endearment. You can't even spend ten years or more in a dilapidated prison full of murderers without developing some sort of psychological cathexis with it.
