$38 Billion in loan guarantees to start building nuclear plants.

Do you think the problems they are having with the Japanese plants will cause another 30 year moratorium on building them here?

Or do you think those 40 year old plants holding up as well as they have *so far* tells us we should go ahead full blast and build as many as we can as fast as we can?

This is just an example of how we can make them even safer.

Needs more independent back-up systems and automatic emergency shut-offs.

Also designing them to have a much longer maximum lifetime than they're allowed to stay active.

But really, you have to look at how much local damage a coal power plant does. They do that while they're working normally. A nuclear plant is fine unless something goes horribly wrong.

The plants in Japan use pre 70s equipment, even equipment from the 70s would make this a lot easier.

That specific plant was already scheduled to be scrapped. This is a sign that that you have to take down nuclear plants *before* their estimated end-of-life.

I think it's a little early to make the call, you're going to have to see the long term consequences once the meltdowns run their course before making any judgment.

It's not exactly as if the coasts are immune from disasters like tsunamis or hurricanes.

Coincidental. It was the closest to the earthquake and was out of date and scheduled to be demolished within weeks.
