Member | Mon Feb 14 10:35:31 I took one for the team and watched clicked on the link. Basically some guy getting offended that Obama used the incorrect term "took one for the Gipper" because of how Reagan somehow has come to be known as the Gipper. I don't understand how this sort of triviality could offend HR more than Bush Jr. using our volunteer military to invade another nation based on hunches, guesses, and maybes. Or, if you want to dis Obama, focusing on his insane spending policies and limp dicked health care reform plan. |

Member | Mon Feb 14 13:19:08 George Gipp From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Gipper) Jump to: navigation, search "The Gipper" redirects here. For the actor who played "The Gipper" and later became President of the United States, see Ronald Reagan. George Gipp Date of birth: February 18, 1895(1895-02-18) Place of birth: Laurium, Michigan Date of death: December 14, 1920(1920-12-14) (aged 25) Place of death: South Bend, Indiana Career information Position(s): Halfback Organizations As player: 1917-1920 Notre Dame Career highlights and awards Honors: All-American Gipp Memorial, Laurium, Michigan. Gravestone in Lake View Cemetery, Calumet George "The Gipper" Gipp (February 18, 1895 â?? December 14, 1920) was a college football player who played for the University of Notre Dame. Gipp was selected as Notre Dame's first All-American and is Notre Dame's second consensus All-American (of 79), after Gus Dorais. Gipp played multiple positions, most notably halfback, quarterback, and punter. He is still considered today to be one of the most versatile athletes to play the game of football and is the subject of Knute Rockne's famous "Win just one for the Gipper" speech. Gipp died at the age of 25 of streptococcal throat infection, days after leading Notre Dame to a win over Northwestern in his senior season.[1] Contents [hide] * 1 College career * 2 Death * 3 "Win just one for the Gipper" * 4 Exhumation and controversy * 5 Honors * 6 References * 7 Further reading * 8 External links [edit] College career Born in Laurium, Michigan, he entered Notre Dame intending to play baseball for the Fighting Irish, but was recruited by Knute Rockne for the football team, despite having no experience in organized football.[2] During his Notre Dame career, Gipp led the Irish in rushing and passing each of his last three seasons (1918, 1919 and 1920).[2] His career mark of 2,341 rushing yards lasted more than 50 years until Jerome Heavens broke it in 1978.[2] Gipp also threw for 1,789 yards and did not allow a pass completion in his territory.[2] He scored 21 career touchdowns, averaged 38 yards a punt, and gathered five interceptions as well as 14 yards per punt return and 22 yards per kick return in four seasons of play for the Fighting Irish.[2] Gipp is still Notre Dame's all-time leader for a career in average yards per rush (8.1), average yards per play for total offense (9.37), and average yards per game for total offense (128.4).[3] [edit] Death Gipp died December 14, 1920, two weeks after being elected Notre Dame's first All-American by Walter Camp and second consensus All-American overall. A frequently-told but probably apocryphal story of Gipp's death begins when he returned to Notre Dame's campus after parietals from a night out. Unable to gain entrance to his residence, Gipp went to the rear door of Washington Hall, the campus' theatre building. Gipp was a steward for the building and knew the rear door was often unlocked. He usually spent such nights in the hall. On that night, however, the door was locked, and Gipp was forced to sleep outside. By the morning he had contracted pneumonia and eventually died from a related infection. It is more likely that Gipp contracted strep throat and pneumonia while giving punting lessons after his final game, November 20 against Northwestern University. Since antibiotics were not yet available in the 1920s, treatment options for such infections were limited and they could be fatal even to young, healthy individuals. Gipp's hometown, Laurium, built a memorial in his honor; he is buried in nearby Lake View Cemetery in Calumet, Michigan. [edit] "Win just one for the Gipper" It was on his hospital bed that he is purported to have delivered the famous,"win just one for the Gipper" line.[4][5] He apparently said this line to Knute Rockne, the football coach of Notre Dame.[6] The full quotation from which the line is derived is: â?? I've got to go, Rock. It's all right. I'm not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy. â?? Rockne used the story of Gipp, along with this deathbed line that he attributed to Gipp, to rally his team to an underdog victory over the undefeated Army team of 1928 at Yankee Stadium.[2] The phrase "Win one for the Gipper" was later used as a political slogan by Ronald Reagan, who in 1940 portrayed Gipp in Knute Rockne, All American and was often referred to as "The Gipper". His most famous use of the phrase was at the 1988 Republican National Convention when he told Vice President George H. W. Bush, "George, go out there and win one for the Gipper." The term was also used by President George W. Bush at the 2004 Republican Convention when he honored the recently deceased President Reagan by stating, "this time we can truly win one for the Gipper." Win one for the Gipper was also imitated by Dwight Schultz at the end of the episode The Bells of St. Mary's in the third season of The A-Team. The story was parodied in the 1980 movie Airplane! when Dr. Rumack tells Ted Striker the story of George Zipp, and to "win one for the Zipper". [edit] Exhumation and controversy On October 4, 2007, George Gipp's body was exhumed for DNA testing to determine if he had fathered a child out of wedlock with an 18-year-old high school student. The right femur was removed and the rest of the remains were reburied the same day. A sports author who was present at the exhumation said it was requested by Rick Frueh, the grandson of one of Gipp's sisters.[7] The tests showed that Gipp was not the father of the child who was born within days of Gipp's death and who died in 2006.[8][9] Other Gipp relatives claim exhumation was conducted in a manner and under circumstances that are subject to legal action for damages.[10] [edit] Honors * Gipp was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame (located in South Bend, Indiana) on December 14, 1951, at 3:27 a.m., in memory of the time and date of his death. * George Gipp Memorial Park was dedicated on August 3, 1935, in his hometown. A plaque kept in the park lists former George Gipp Award-winners, given to outstanding senior, male athletes from Calumet High School. * In World War II, the United States liberty ship SS George Gipp was named in his honor. * He was ranked #22 on ESPN's Top 25 Players In College Football History list.[11] [edit] References 1. ^ "Video". Then we still get the 'Bush caused this recession' charges and he should go to prison threads. Yet Obama stands up there and declares himself another Lincoln or FDR and now he has the audacity to declare himself another Reagan, when he is not a good enough president to carry Reagan's dirty shorts, you guys get all defensive and attack the messenger. You people are really pathetic. |

Member | Tue Feb 15 18:38:29 Reagan was the epitome of mediocrity. He just happened to follow a god awful president who was preceded by a corrupt administration, so he looks comparatively better. I honestly don't understand the hero worship with this guy. He was the first in a long line of presidents who generated an ever growing debt. He supported corrupt regimes in other countries which emboldened the terrorists that we see today. And he sold weapons to these terrorists. Not to mention that he didn't defeat the Soviets as how many uninformed conservatives think. It's almost as stupid as saying Teddy Roosevelt is a bad president. |

He is trying to create a false image of him being 'like' Reagan who brought an economy back from a brink while he has not only done nothing to bring our economy back from the brink, but his polices have done more to push us over the brink. He is trying to create a false impression that his policies are working. Plus it goes to his character. He can still be a good guy, while making foolish statements. Now my question is, why do you think I am a racist when you know better? That is another lie told about me and, if you have read my posts instead of those who get off on attacking me, you know it is a lie. |

No, they are similar policies, rod. They both result in deficit spending during a recession. Both of them plan to pay back their spending measures during a future administration. Reagan spent because of the bogeyman the soviet union, and obama is spending to suit his own needs as well. Stop being such a hypocrite to act like reagan is on mount rushmore and obama was impeached. |

Member | Wed Feb 16 21:43:13 "....U.S. Economy, Employment Improving" Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said today that the U.S. economy is â??getting strongerâ?? and companies are starting to hire again. â??Things are gradually improving,â?? Geithner said at a town hall event in Washington. He said businesses are becoming more confident and starting to invest and add jobs. Geithner predicted that â??the unemployment rateâ??s going to come down gradually over the next several years,â?? given current growth rates and private-sector forecasts. He said last monthâ??s drop in joblessness to 9 percent from 9.4 percent in December â??probably overstatedâ?? labor-market strength, while separate figures on hiring â??probably understatedâ?? current conditions. The decrease in unemployment from 9.8 percent in November is the biggest two-month drop since 1958, according to Labor Department data released last week. Employers added 36,000 workers last month, short of the 146,000 median gain projected by economists in a Bloomberg News survey. To create conditions for more hiring, the Obama administration wants to spend more on infrastructure and other investment incentives. In a blog post on the Treasuryâ??s web site today, Geithner invoked the economic potential of manufacturing, shipping and technology companies. Infrastructure Projects For example, efforts to upgrade the U.S. air traffic control system will help companies in a broad swath of the economy, he said. Honeywell Inc., Boeing Co. and General Electric Co. are all involved in the Federal Aviation Administrationâ??s NextGen upgrade plan, and other firms like FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. will benefit from transportation improvements. Geithner said the U.S. will press ahead with efforts to improve the U.S. tax code. He said the administration would not consider proposals for a â??tax holidayâ?? for profits held by U.S. companies overseas unless a broader overhaul was under way. â??We are not going to look at a repatriation holiday outside the context of comprehensive reform,â?? Geithner said. He repeated his call for a â??fiscally responsibleâ?? plan that lowers rates while also broadening the tax base and offering incentives for investment. â??Weâ??re not going to ask Americans to pay higher taxes so we can lower taxes on businesses,â?? Geithner said. Cutting the Deficit Geithner said the Obama administration soon will release â??very detailedâ?? programs for curbing future deficits and encouraging economic growth. Republicans in Congress are calling for big spending cuts to rein in record budget deficits that have topped $1 trillion for two years in a row. Geithner today said the U.S. fiscal outlook is â??fundamentally manageableâ?? and that interest rates on Treasury debt are â??exceptionally low,â?? reflecting investor confidence that the U.S. will bring its deficits down gradually without hurting growth. He also predicted that Congress would raise the $14.29 trillion debt limit, which the Treasury predicts could be breached by the end of May, in time to avoid market disruptions. â??The U.S. will meet its obligations and Congress will act as it always has to make sure we meet those obligations,â?? he said. http://www...nomy-employment-improving.html |

Member | Thu Feb 17 10:15:08 LOL you fail. Hidden Economic Indicators Show Economy Improving A recent survey of franchise owners across the country revealed there are sectors of the economy that appear to be growing and presenting business opportunities for 2011. A 20-year-old Colorado company specializing in the custom crating, packing and shipping of anything to anywhere sees subtle indicators of positive growth in the U.S. economy. In a recent survey conducted by Craters & Freighters among its 60 franchise owners, 79% said the Industrial/Commercial business sector poses a major opportunity for growth in 2011. â??This sector has been growing in the last half of 2010 and appears to be recovering from its 2009 dip,â?? said Atlanta franchise owner Robert Yokley. Likewise, 58% of franchise owners identified the IT/Electrical business sector as a key area of focus for growth in the coming year. Trends in this sector appear to have been particularly stronger in the past six months with increased shipments of large IT and electrical equipment such as large servers. If shipments of large, expensive, hard-to-ship equipment by both of these sectors are increasing, that sends a positive signal regarding the economic recovery in the United States. Because these are business-to-business items, the positive outlook for 2011 is also a good sign for potential job growth among larger employers. Nearly half of all franchisees participating in the survey indicated that the medical equipment sector also holds promise for significant growth in 2011. An increase in the shipment of medical equipment to hospitals and clinics from manufacturers is positive but not necessarily surprising given the aging of the U.S. population and its growing demands for healthcare. The aging population has also created a new category of growth for Craters & Freighters in markets where the population is skewed toward older, mid to higher income homeowners. Estate sales during 2010, especially in the last half of the year, have seen growth according to many franchisees. The growth has been significant enough that the company has identified the shipment of furniture and large estate sale items to multiple family members wherever they live as a new focus in 2011. A reflection of trends in online activity across all consumer and business segments in the U.S. is the use of online search capabilities that 70% of owners say is very important for generating both business and residential customers. It would appear the search engine wars are likely to get even more robust as this becomes the preferred way for both businesses and consumers to find specialized resources such as Craters & Freighters. The survey also had good news for marketers if the franchisees are indicative of the business category in general. Over 90% of those surveyed said that making efforts to increase brand awareness is an important factor in growing their businesses. However, that may not mean growing investment in traditional media as nearly 9 out of 10 franchisees believe referrals and word of mouth are the most important factor in business growth. As a result, there is growing awareness of social networks and how to leverage that tool in the crating and freighting category. In another positive sign for the economy, Diane Gibson, the CEO and founder of Craters & Freighters says, â??We see 2011 as a year of new growth. All the indicators we see are positive and weâ??re responding by aggressively growing our franchise network.â?? The company currently has 67 franchise locations across the country and has targeted adding 16 more in 2011. â??All of our franchises are independently owned and provide an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurial people who may be leaving their corporate lives,â?? said Gibson. â??What theyâ??ll find here is a huge opportunity to meet Americaâ??s growing logistics needs.â?? Based on the survey indicators, if timing is everything, 2011 appears to be a good time for Craters & Freighters.
