The Tucson Memorial: Decorum's Gotterdammerung

I hadn't intended to watch the spectacle known as the Tucson Memorial service for those killed by the deranged shooter in Arizona. It was background noise as I cleared our dinner table and loaded the dishwasher. However, what played out on the television drew me in like a science fiction 'tractor beam.'

What I witnessed was reminiscent of the noisy high school graduations of my daughters. Or of a high school or college pep rally from my earlier years. The only thing missing were cheerleaders. Attorney General Eric Holder attempted to provide proper words to the occasion by reading from the book of Isaiah; those words from Scripture were met with claps, cheers, and whoops. There was even a Native American incantation to that culture's deities; were any of the deceased members of that faith? Who cares? -- someone thought it would be 'cool.' Once again -- claps, cheers, and whoops from the crowd, which was apparently made up largely of University of Arizona students.

Has our social order coarsened so thoroughly that young adults don't even know how to comport themselves at what should have been a solemn event? Must the worth of an assembly be determined by its entertainment value? The culture has neglected to seek God, and as a result it no longer esteems life -- unborn, born, or life recently passed from its midst. Instead its denizens search for continual pleasure and amusement in this temporal domain as an ultimate goal. Formality? Dignity? As in the days of ancient Rome, bring on the bread and circuses!
Some conservative wags on the Internet coined a new phrase for the Tucson Memorial: "Griefapalooza." It fits. It certainly fits.

Incoherent rant, to be sure. Students are blamed for both, bringing some Indian shaman to pray and for their culture that is supposedly "The culture has neglected to seek God". Well, which is it? Or are they just guilty of picking the wrong denomination? Right-wingers are aggrieved by the weirdest things, lol, the decorum. Is this worse or better than lapelgate or Obama bowing?

Much worse.

It was a Memorial Service not a pep rally.
