The speaker isn't the only politician who is trying to have it both ways. Pelosi's opposite number in the House, Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, having made headlines with his scathing denunciation of President Obama's (later hedged) defense of the mosque, is off to campaign for a GOP candidate whose statements on the controversial subject sound like the president's. CNN reports that Boehner will be headlining a fundraiser in upstate New York later this week for Chris Gibson, a Republican challenging Democratic Rep. Scott Murphy. Gibson, an Iraq veteran, set off a lively debate on his Facebook page by arguing against the mosque's attackers. Fox News reported that Gibson's campaign removed his comments that "churches, synagogues and mosques should be treated the same" and that "in the effort to save America we should never violate her" after they provoked "nasty" responses. Gibson is a retired Army colonel who served four tours of duty in Iraq. We should NOT look at funding for the mosque or opposition any deeper than we look at funding for any other religious building. You also have to ask yourself how are we going to look at funding for both? It will end up being a taxpayer funded investigation for what should be a non-issue. This is very cut and dry to me - we are a free country and part of freedom entails someone to legally have the right to do something that you may personally be opposed to. You are free to disagree, but it ends there. Investigating where funding is coming from on both sides is just going to end up making them both look bad when it's found out a guy who donated $10 once said 'america should be all muslim' or 'all muslims should die.' A full government audit will just make this a bigger issue. The LAST thing we need is to bring out more bigots on both sides.
