WASHINGTON (AFP) â?? New claims for jobless insurance benefits in the United States rose unexpectedly for the second straight week, the government said Thursday on concerns unemployment may derail the economic recovery.

Claims climbed to 472,000 in the week to June 12, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 460,000, the Labor Department said.

Most economists had expected claims to fall to 450,000.

Unemployment stands at nearly 10 percent, posing a major threat to recovery from the most severe recession in decades.

Has anyone here ever known a true Nigerian scam artist?

I have a friend who is a truck driver. Seriously, I'm not talking about Fred. I mean I have a long time friend who lives in North Carolina who has been a truck driver for years.

Recently, this truck driving friend got news that his daughter was suddenly and violently ill. Because of some economic hardship, the truck driver friend of mine didn't have tons of money in the bank, but he did have just enough for the cost of the treatment (something like US $20,000).

Anyway, one day, my friend is approached in a restaurant by someone who wants him to invest in a Nigerian scam. This guy went on and on telling my friend about the scam, and made it sound great. Eventually my friend said " well, I'd like to invest, but my daughter is very, very sick, and she is going to die unless I can get this treatment for her".

The Nigerian scam artist just sat there for a moment, silently. Then, with a great deal of emotion, he said to my friend, "Oh, my buddy, I feel so sorry for you, and for your daughter who is near death. I really want to help you! I will tell you what I will do for you. Just give me the 20 thousand dollars out of your money, and *I* will pay for all your daughter's treatment myself, and then give you another 20 thousand dollars ON TOP OF THAT!" Of course, as with all Nigerian scams, the money must be wired to Nigeria, to pay some kind of release fee for the inherited millions of dollars that never exists.

Here, my hard working truck driver friend has just enough to treat his daughter, and this criminal Nigerian scammer *COULD NOT CARE LESS*. He would take EVERY PENNY from a dying old man if given the opportunity. Do you understand the absolute stone cold hardness involved in this sort of crime? This is not stealing a diamond from a billionaire (who might hardly notice). This is stealing from people who are already down. This is stealing a crust of bread from a weathered old woman or stealing the possessions of orphans in the street. This is Somali pirate, stone cold I don't give a fuck if you die in the sea, give me all your fuel.

And this is the same kind of person behind the Federal Reserve Bank, and the other organizations that have orchestrated the economic implosion of the nations, for their own personal gain.

I am seriously now contemplating the stockpiling of food.

To be frank, I'm not quite there just yet, but I am seriously thinking about my grandparents that survived the Great Depression, and how by the end of it, they were jarring food, and canning food, and even until the end of their lives, they were constantly stockpiling food. I always sort of chuckled at the behavior. Not for lack of respect, but just because I could not relate. I understood the behavior, mind you. My grandmother kept food in the jars and in the refrigerator long past their due, so that my family would constantly have to throw the food away, for fear that my grandmother might try to eat it, and in the process make herself ill. She was ruthlessly frugal.

Perhaps it is time to start dusting off those lessons, and begin filling the pantry.

You know that just before cutting the head off a chicken, you can put a sock on its head, and stroke it gently. It will become calm and pacified, and allow you to lay it horizontally on the side of a small tree stump, or the root of a tree. Then you can get a very clean shot with your machete, or your hatchet, causing minimal suffering to the animal, and without spoiling the meat. It is considered a humane way of butchering the chicken in many Central and South American countries.
