They are far and away the bestseller of the holiday season, so why does one woman say her boss fired her for buying a Zhu Zhu Pet Hamster? An employee of a Buffalo, NY-area Target store for 13 years, Susan Kronbeck, says she was working the overnight shift several weeks ago when she bought the toy. In response to the firing, Target told WKBW it has specific guidelines for when employees can purchase items during scheduled shifts. "Violations of these policies may lead to corrective action up to and including termination," the Target statement says. "Because this is a personnel issue we are unable to provide additional specifics regarding this incident." Kronbeck's purchase was made four hours before 8 a.m., the hour store employees had been informed was admissible for buying merchandise. But she says she was not aware of a hold on toys, and now she's out of a job right before the holidays. Six other Target employees were fired from the same store for the same violation. With the robotic hamsters commanding high prices on resale sites like eBay, there have been rumors that employees at several stores are taking advantage of their early access to the popular toys by buying them and reselling them online at higher prices. With Zhu Zhu Pets out of stock at Target.com, we can see how the temptation to snatch one up might have been too much for an employee to resist. But since Kronbeck didn't steal the mechanical hamster (she bought it), we're wondering if firing her was the best course of action. What do you think -- does the furor surrounding the Zhu Zhu pets make Target's response an appropriate one? Or was there a better way to handle this -- something more in keeping with the spirit of the Christmas season? UPDATE: Target has rehired Kronbeck and the six other employees who lost their jobs for buying Zhu Zhu pets. In a statement released on December 20, Target said they had "carefully reviewed the situation at the Walden Galleria Target store, and we have determined that the team member terminations were the unintended consequence of a good policy rigidly applied. Therefore, Target intends to reinstate all seven of the team members, effective immediately." Kronbeck -- who was in danger of losing her house when she was fired -- told Buffalo TV station WKBW that she will be back at Target on Tuesday and will be paid for the days of work she has missed. Good move, Target. http://new...ired-for-buying-zhu-zhu-pet%2F |

Member | Mon Dec 21 19:58:42 The opening paragraph of this article was so stupid it actually pissed it off. After heavily implying that her firing was a direct consequence of her choosing to purchase a certain brand of toy, the article does a complete about-face and explains that the woman was actually fired for breaking the rules of the retail store she works at. Holy shit. At best that was just incredibly shitty writing style on the part of the author; at worst it was shameless fradulent sensationalism. Such pisspoor authorship should be illegal IMO. |

Employees were doing just as the article suggested, getting the Wii and then selling for huge profit on E-bay. It had been happening before but the Wii really highlighted the problem. Some stores actually adopted a policy that employees couldn't purchase certain "hot" items at the store they worked instead having to go to another branch. |

Its like the ed. told the journalist, "listen, do you think you could put a sob story twist on this somehow what with it being xmas and all?", "Well, they were all caught emptying their employees shelves so that parents who wanted to give them to their kids for xmas were forced to pay exorbitant prices, but Ill try boss". |

I mean I would take that as kind of a benefit for working graveyards and take that into account... Of coruse I have never worked retail. |
