modern Marine combat formations are not reckoned as traditional/conventional Battalions or Brigades. the names are still used, but generally only administratively. and for esprit de corps stuff.

doing some mental math, the ship would hold the line element's of a MEU's Ground Combat Element, which was probably indeed it's design. three line companies and a weapons company.

the indirect fire assets of the GCE, in addition to things like the combat engineers, vehicles and crews, etc.

3 rifle companies and a weapons company, alone, is a pretty helpless unit in the year 2009. the Iraqi Army learned that in Gulf War 1 after their indirect fire and logistics assets where crippled.

without additional assets, maybe you could use the ship's contingent to guard a prison or do border patrol stuff. nothing hot, though.
