I think maybe what happened with the Soviet invasion of the country shows what will happen with our own continued attempted occupation. Alexander was able to defeat the ancient tribes who were just as bad at rabble rousing, but he was only able to do it by marrying one of them, and I really don't think that Michelle Obama is going to like it very much if Barack Obama marries an Afganhi woman.

What is the purpose of NATO being there anyway? So if Taliban come back to power they don't give refuge to AQ? Who gives a crap if they do, really? AQ can plan attacks from Pakistan, just as well. 9/11 attackers trained in Europe, got financed through international transfers and executed their plan in USA. Wtf does it have to do with Afghanistan? Some chance meetings with figureheads like OBL? You can always bribe tribes in Afghanistan so they will never stop fighting.

Yes, but that would require sound strategy and much more commitment in money and troops.
(Or hoping the Afghans wake the fuck up, like the Iraqis did)
