Utopia Talk / Politics / Questions About General Motors
Hot Rod
Member | Sun Sep 20 17:15:34 General Motors is now offering a 60 day, money back guarantee on their cars. If you don't like it, bring it back. Well we all know that a large portion of the corporation is now owned by the union. Considering these two developments, what impact do you think that will have on the employees seniority and job security? If they have a drunk in their midst, like this fellow I used to know who worked for them, will they find make work for him like sweeping up? Will they promote a tattle tale system where if you see someone screwing up something that might cause a returned auto you have to turn them in? Will incorrigibles now be dismissed instead of the union backing them up? One more question, who gets the stock dividends, if any? Will they be divided amongst the employees, or will they go to the union coffers? Will union dues be reduced? None of these question have been answered that I know of. Has anyone seen anything that answers them? |

Member | Mon Sep 21 02:23:22 You mean the union's health fund? |

Member | Mon Sep 21 02:41:53 The union has a 17.5% stake in the company. |

Member | Mon Sep 21 02:49:59 the union got the stake through the health care trust. |

Member | Mon Sep 21 03:23:04 Given that the company is worth -80 billion, I think it may be a while before dividends are paid. The union is a minority shareholder that should not really involve itself in the detailed management of the company (imagine if that was commonplace. It might bring back cherry coke to the Coca Cola empire. By minority owners demand). Alcoholism is classified as a disease. Not sure what current GM policy is in terms of finding suitable employment and sobriety followups. By tattle system you mean quality control and workers signing off on completed tasks? Better hope that is in place. Its a must in industry these days. Will the union continue to enforce binding contracts on behalf of its members? I would hope so. The new labour agreement is a lot harsher than the old one in terms of worker discipline. So perhaps that is the effect you were looking for. So yepp, easier to dismiss. The general attrition plan targets marginal workers anyway. So I think you can rest assured. Enough to save GM? Goodness knows. I doubt it. Vehicle overproduction globally is quite significant. |

Some that have left the US to save this costs might consider returning to save in shipping costs. |

Member | Mon Sep 21 05:53:32 He's talking about this. "One more question, who gets the stock dividends, if any? Will they be divided amongst the employees, or will they go to the union coffers? Will union dues be reduced? None of these question have been answered that I know of. Has anyone seen anything that answers them? " |

Member | Mon Sep 21 05:59:57 That all has to do with the single question, "who gets the stock dividends?" The following "two" questions are *DIRECTLY RELATED" to the one. To answer the one you need to consider the others. |

Member | Mon Sep 21 06:06:19 He knows full well that Chen's talking about "One more question", he just refuses to be found wrong so he's pretending...like he always does... |

Member | Mon Sep 21 06:36:40 "General Motors is now offering a 60 day, money back guarantee on their cars. If you don't like it, bring it back." So it basically doesn't cost you a nickel to rent a car for 60 days from GM? |

Member | Mon Sep 21 06:51:16 Paramount, evidently though I'm not sure of the exact details or how much red tape is involved. The new CEO has been hawking the plan on TV recently. |
