The train in spain falls mainly on the plain

Stealing copper is an old classic among the poorest bums in society, i.e. kids, homeless alcoholics. Very little money but very little risk

Its a notch above collecting recyclable bottles for a pack of cigarettes

They don't have any "high voltage" signs in Spain?

This seems to be sabotage, not theft, though.

We should build gyms where people get paid to generate power by bicycling a couple of hours on grid-connected bikes. I wonder how much power a couple of billion people peddling for a couple of hours would generate, aside from the health benefits?

between 100 and 2500 watts per hour, apparently, from the lowest level to an elite cyclist.

1 billion people pedalling at 500 watts would generate 500 gigawatts in one hour. A nuclear power plant produces 8 gigawatts a year. So 1 billion people cycling for one hour at 500 watts an hour would generate the equivalent of around 65 nuclear plants a year or something, if my math isnt off.

Per time is already included in watts. You just need to say watts. Though including the averaging period is important.

2500 watts mechanical sounds like the world record sprint value averaged over perhaps 10 seconds. Thats a LOT of power from a human. The world record sustained over 1 hour is just under 500w mechanical last i checked but maybe its been beaten since i last cared about cycling physics. I can perhaps manage half that at my absolute best and i am in excellent shape for an amateur, and the vast majority of humans are in the 100s or less. Much less daily averaged.

The record for long term(months) human mechanical output is 50w. This is a metabolic limit rather than a muscular one. Humans cannot digest much more than 6000 calories per day especially while working out all the time.

The typical human in the developed world uses around 1000w of power(averaged over any period)... so ya we cant keep up.

Ok, apparently pro cyclists only maintain about 2000 watts for a few seconds and theyre down to half of that after 45 seconds. However, 4 hours later theyre still generating 350 watts.
