Utopia Talk / Politics / My cat can count to 20

The church here has several infernal, pre-programmed series of peals that it likes to unleash on unwary tourists. One of them consists of 20 chimes that start off slow but speed up between the 5th and the 17th chime, before slowing down and ending. The cat and I know them all off by heart, but this particular peal is one of the more offensive ones and makes her sit up and point her ears in displeasure until its over. I was watching here thinking, dont worry, thats 19, only 1 more chime left and as it hit 20, she laid her head down again. Coincidence? I dont think she would lay her head down until it stopped. I wonder if its possible she may not count 20 but still has learnt a rough estimate? Thats counting too.

My cat can count to 3. I know that from kittens. 4-6 is too many, but it got a bit concerned and went looking when kittens 1-3 were given away.

3 is an interesting quantity. Its on/off plus an abstract factor

Shes probably learnt that once it slows down again on the 17th chime from there on there are only a few chimes/3 chimes left

BUt that still seems like she's able to vaguely estimate the longer stretch of 13 fast chimes in between, as part of a complete pattern she recognizes

It’s not even his first thread about how smart his cat is!

My oldest son is turning 6 in august, you know what he told me the other day? Dad do you know why snot runs down from your nose? Why I asked. It’s because of gravity, he told me with smug face.

That my friends, is real, unlike willie hallucinating about his cat.

And then you walk into the bedroom and both the boys and mom are sleeping crawled around their each other. Little guy wakes up and starts groping my wifes titties like some kind of drunk mini man.. lol. I pity the man that have not seen that sight and experienced the satisfaction. That *is* my world, my life right there in that bed.

To be fair, kittens can grope after teats too and it is rather cute.

The cuteness of kittens is not the controversy! Though no animal will ever provide the same satisfaction, they are not your descendants :-)

We'll see how you feel about it when he's 15.

This thread reminds me of a quote by James Michael Curley, an early 20th-century Mayor of Boston and Irish Catholic demagogue who loved mocking the Protestant Anglo-Saxon Yankees as a dying race of effetes that treated their dogs like surrogate children:

---

"No country is ever ruined by a virile, intelligent, Godfearing, patriotic people like the Irish; and no land was ever saved by little clubs of female faddists, old men with disordered livers, or pessimists croaking over imaginary good old days and ignoring the sunlit present.

What we need in this part of America is men and mothers of men, and not gabbing spinsters and dog-raising matrons in federation assembled.

The [age of the] Puritan has passed; the Anglo-Saxon is a joke; a newer and better America is here."

-JMC, January 21, 1916

Oh, he's got a ton of these sorts of quotes. Here's one where he's describing the Back Bay, a neighborhood that was home to the wealthy descendants of elite Yankee families:

"'Do you want to be governed by a small group of men in the Back Bay?' [Curley] thunders. Then, in a scornful tone, 'The Back Bay, where they have kitchenettes, dogs and no children.' The crowd laughs uproariously.

'Or would you rather stick with South Boston, where they have kitchens, children, and if a dog does drift in he comes over from the Back Bay?'
Needless to say, the crowd prefers the children to the dogs."

---

But yeah, Curley may not have understood exactly what he was witnessing, but what he was describing was the real-time extinction of the urbanized "local" population through their refusal to have children. The Protestant Yankees, being socially liberal adoptees of "Progressive" politics, feminism, legalized birth control, and the pursuit of secular pleasures, had no need or desire to start families of any size. To Curley and his conservative Irish Catholic political base, this was social degeneracy run amok.

It's the same dynamic that's playing out today in the Western World, though the modern demographic cliff is obviously much more massive in scale since the drop in family sizes has become endemic to the entire population in general, as opposed to one single ethnic group like in Curley's day.

Incidentally, Curley was very much a Donald Trump of the early 20th century.

- He pretty much made his social career through sheer force of personality

- Had a base of hardcore supporters that would do practically anything for him

- Combined social conservatism with economic populism

- Was regularly accused of being a serial liar and using his office to engage in financial corruption

- Loved saying inflammatory shit that would piss off the elites

- Was absolutely LOATHED by his political opponents and spent much of his career under the threat of being criminally prosecuted (he was thrown in federal prison during his fourth term as mayor)

- Did tons of unethical shit to win elections

- Was hated by the heads of his own party

- Was willing to use physical violence on multiple occasions against his political enemies

People who think that Trump is some sort of unprecedented political personality have clearly never read our nation's history. Politics was historically a lot more rough and tumble than it is today.

But did he walk up to women and give them a brief credit card check as a hello?

Sadly, he never developed the celebrity status required to be able to grab good Irish Catholic lasses by the nunny as they were leaving Mass.

So, Trump 1, Curley 0 there.
