From this is appears pretty simple: CNN discovered the meme creator. They attempted to contact him in some sort of real communication method (personal email or voicemail on his cell??) and upon receiving this the guy flipped shit at being found irl and deleted all his stuff. CNN then had a formal discussion after guy already flipped shit. CNN posted their article with the extremely disconcerting part about reserving the right to out the guy. Is CNN a shitbag for finding this guy offline? Yes. Did they threaten to out him? It would seem no. And there's been no inconsistency in that messaging that I've seen.
