I suppose the guy is relieved, since the prosecution asked for death. If their attempt to also convict the CEO of the the company that operated the ferry is successful, I'd say that justice has been served. The vessel was grossly overloaded. As for the outcry about the lax safety standards, that is on citizens, you want to elect people who will legislate and enforce such standards.

I wonder how many lives would have been saved if those 15 had done their very best to save lives.

"The verdict was met with outrage..."

Oh boy. Here comes the friends and family of the captain, to whine about how the poor captain is just a normal guy, who made an error in judgment, and shouldn't have to pay for it with 36 years of his life. I guess you have to have one of these paragraphs in every article about a murder victim, but damn, is it tire-...

"The verdict was met with outrage by families of the victim, who gathered outside court asking for an appeal and calling for the death penalty for the crew members."

Holy shit! South Koreans are hardcore. 36 years wasn't enough for you guys? Jesus.

people were told to stay in their cabins, and then 300 died... meanwhile he left... not saying he's the one who told them, but as captain, kinda his responsibility to hang around

Kirk would've accepted responsibility

Yeah, and look what good that did him. He ended up falling off a goddamn bridge.

Shoulda sent a redshirt to repair the engines while he took off in a shuttlecraft to escape the nexus.

it was really kinda fucking weird how they decided to portray Kirk as a coward at the end.

Anyways though, this is another case where you can give the captain/crew what ever sentence you like, it wont do a damn thing to really give justice. I dont blame them for outrage with 300 dead though. I dont care what the reason is, 300 dead should mean your life is over. Either dead, or locked in a tiny cell, depending on whether you are the type to be bothered by incarceration or not

Kirk in Star Trek V: "Damn it, Bones, you're a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can't be taken away with a wave of a magic wand. They're the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don't want my pain taken away! I need my pain!"

Kirk in Generations: "Yeah, I'm just gonna hang out in fantasy land for a couple centuries. Fuck reality, it sucks too much."

Not inconsistent at all.

Oh I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that the OP was such an important and divisive story that we needed to spend 100 posts debating it. Please, ignore my previous posts and feel free to engage in serious conversation regarding the subject at hand.

the Nexus had a narcotic quality so can't really fault Kirk

unlike this Korean captain who committed up to 300 negligent homicides

Ya, the scene were Kirk is actually dieing was kind of pathetic too. He should have been a bit more stoic about the whole thing. Picard is an epic asshole though

oh I typo'd meant was, and only about the scene were kirk is begging picard to put him back in the Nexus and Picard just tells Kirk how pathetically disgusting he is and lets him die. Picard is awesome all around.

He was never an asshole, not once. Everything he did, even on those rare occasions that could have remotely been called assholness, was bound by duty and honor and always done with utmost integrity.

Well, until the movies assassinated his character in an attempt to turn a 65 year old man with arthritis into an action hero. His behavior in Nemesis was particularly atrocious. Also, he straight up murdered the bad guy in Insurrection.

Duty to his crew, duty to Starfleet, captain's honor, etc. Read up on these things, and you will easily understand what dictated the need to do what he did in every case you mentioned. Plus, I don't see the word asshole there, atrocious is not the same.

telling someone off about how worthless they are while they are currently dieing seems a little assholish to me. there were 1 or 2 unwarranted verbal outbursts during the series. I mean, he always made things right in the end, but he was still human

Yeah, duty to Starfleet mandated that poor Ru'afo be allowed to be roasted alive, rather than beamed aboard the Enterprise and put in prison for his crimes. Even given the wide latitude that Starfleet captains are given in their ToDs, that seems like he crossed a line there.

Also, Picard was a fucking retard in Insurrection. Yes, the Federation should be denied this miracle healing stuff that could be used to help millions of people wounded during the Dominion War, because it would result in the displacement of a couple thousand natives. Whatever happened to the Needs of the Many, asshole?

No, fuck you. Like I said, movie Picard is a fucking asshole. TV Picard is one of the great men of eternity, which makes his character assassination in the films all the more unbearable to watch.

he was a doormat and a quitter... how about a 'hey bitch, can i at least have the life jacket?'

Kirk would've been up on that raft keeping warm with sex, while Picard would've grabbed the raft and swam them to the life boats

I approve of this thread's topic.

"Picard would've grabbed the raft and swam them to the life boats"

That is weird, right? I don't agree with people who thought/think that they both could have fit on the board, because that's a simplification, but kicking out to the lifeboats... okay nvm I just Google'd:
http://ca....ndex?qid=20120417104828AASZtmu
Because the water was so cold, they wouldn't have been able to swim for more than 5 minutes, but the boats had moved much further away :/

"Kirk would've been up on that raft keeping warm with sex, while Picard would've grabbed the raft and swam them to the life boats "

Both of these options aren't realistic. You are dealing with fucking ice cold water. You aren't going to get a hard dick and you aren't going to be able to swim very far in water so cold youd get hypothermia in minutes.

Getting on top of the board would've killed them both. Maybe Jack could've found a fucking dresser for himself before jumping off ship, or maybe stolen a cello, but he didn't. He had no choice, him or his girl and he chose his girl.

Alpha move which stuck with her throughout the rest of her life. Sure she got married and had kids, but she never forgot the dude who let himself die for her. And in her "afterlife" she ended up with him.

So in the end it is safe to say Jack won.
