I just finished season 1-3 of Longmire.

It's a cop show that follows the Sheriff of county in Wyoming which is next to a large reservation. Lots of typical native stuff, lots of cowboy stuff. It has essentially got a single overarching plot revolving around the death of Sheriff Longmire's wife.

Has Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck, BSG and Diana Welsh,24) and Lou Diamond Philips in it.

It is pretty awesome I thought. Very different setting from most crime dramas, with significantly less emphasis on lab work and procedure. The episodic cases are usually stupidly obvious, but whatever.

It was cancelled recently but Netflix picked it up for season 4 which is in filming apparently. Highly recommend it. All 3 seasons (just 32 episodes) on Netflix.

Katee Sackhoff can only play 1 character from my observations. Starbuck was cool and all (except the first half of season 3), but Katee appears to be a second rate actor. of course, ive onky seen BSG, Nip tuck(she was fired fast), and some b movie sci fi made right after Galactica.

I miss awesome tv like Galactica. Maybe I should check out GoT and see if its any good

She was the weakest part of S8 of 24. Which is like, saying a whole fucking lot.

I don't think she really ruins Longmire though, but her performance is spotty IMO.

Much lols from Community finale! Especially that board game at the end :D
but really great writing throughout. Much impressed. Also liked that McHale and Brie got to discretely trash the Marvel movies! Glad that someone else thinks that they're just sort of these obligatory movies with no substance (I took that as particular to the Avengers side of Marvel, but that might just be because I did at least like some of "Days of Future Past" on the X-Men side)

Guess Alison Brie and Danny Pudi will probs be gone if the show returns, but with the #andamovie thing it looks like they'd worry about another season -after- they've made the movie. ..It's nice that they gave themselves space to be self-reflexively open-ended about their future.

I'm really hoping they don't try to squeeze another season out of it. That finale was really wonderful and another season would likely mean more missing cast. Either give us a movie, or let it go out on a high note.

That scene where Jeff is imagining his "Super Happy Ending" with Annie and their kid was prolly one of the best written scenes of anything that I've seen in a long time.

I liked "The Nature of Things" (posted months ago) so I searched that same site for raccoon videos and this new one came up:
"National Geographic: Raccoon: Backyard Bandit"
(premiered last month; 15 May, 2015)
http://awe...aphic-raccoon-backyard-bandit/

It was okay.. some cute moments. But they tried to narrate it through one of the kits (like, "I am a young raccoon and here's my story), which made it feel staged. Probably the most interesting moment was pretty early (section from 11 to 15 minutes in): they show how the Humane Society gets raccoons to move out of attic spaces. Would recommend that part! :p

Oh I hated Claire a lot, but I think that Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace) was my least favorite character on the entire show. Also seemed like the Kate/Jack/Sawyer triangle was written entirely to annoy the audience. It must have been especially difficult to act Kate's character — like, "oh, I guess this week I'm doing this, but next week I'll be doing something that only makes sense for a completely separate character. K."

locke is a strong person but i wuld go nuts if i had 2 hang around someone like that. the dude has his own agenda, he never explains what he does, he goes off when ur doin missions and then u find out he betrays u. he is a stubborn old man who thinks he is above u.

u say A, he says b. u ask why b, u get the silence stare treatment.

its the same with kate or jacks ex wife. his ex wife leaves him, he asks 4 the name of the guy, and she makes a big deal out of it. whats the big fkin deal, just say his name. it is the same with kate. always lyin or denyin. peoples like that r batshit crazy and i stay as far away from peoples like this.

and u know why. coz they r troubles. and if they arent troubles they r endless drama. ull never get a straight answer from crooks like that. it will just waste ur time. if there is no drama, they will create drama 4 u. like when u want 2 know something, theyll just tell u 2 fck off in 100 different ways like "just let it go", "dunt go there, jack, just let it go".

it will drive u nuts eventually. coz in my head i will be like, "whats the big fkin deal, why cant u just fkin answer the question, u nutcase".

Community kind of made fun of peeps like that in the "Grifting 101" episode:
http://scr...-9-grifting-101-070001340.html

There's a scene where Jeff keeps pretending like everything is according to plan, but really he has no idea and has just been making it up to seem like he's in control.. kind of sums up Locke. He had too much faith that there was some plan guiding him, but really it's just his willingness to be a pawn. A confident pawn, though.

"why wuld u solve crimez and shitz."
That preview makes it look like he's only helping the Police because it's in his interests to prevent others from having the pills. Still looks silly, though. They'll have to keep it going with "power on"/"power off" dramatics, like "oh no! the pill has started wearing off!," which could get annoying very quickly in a TV show. Plus, with Cooper giving him pills, they'll be able to say at any time, "this was always [Cooper's] plan for you" ..

CBS show (that's bad), but might have to watch it once or twice just because Jennifer Carpenter found work ;)

"The Comment Section" addressed that annoying trend of proles asking out celebrities (like how Ronda Rousey was asked out by some dumb Marine)
(Ending segment, starts at about 17:15):
http://awesomedl.ru/the-comment-section-season-1-episode-5/
Definitely nice to hear a comedian hating on that, because it really is disgusting: military peeps forcing compliance onto celebrities via the indirect consequences of a "support our troops" mantra or else random video-makers getting publicity capital for their pleas, and then celebrities caving because the internet lynch mob stupidly supports that kind of behavior and would condemn those celebrities that don't accept. Almost makes me wish that I could be on the receiving end of that kind of celebrity request, just so I could say, "no fuck you" >:)

still... unless they have a guest I like, probably only going to watch clips from meow on. I really don't like his little dance at the beginning, have never liked hosts reacting off their bands (always so forced), and there's too much dead time. Also never liked Colbert's religious side (he tends to be smrt, but his religious sensibilities seem a century behind), which he brought out when he was being overly nice to Biden. Blah. Lots of complaints. Think I prefer John Oliver's show atm; compact and great writing :p

In case you haven't watched yet, in this one they get a new principal who satires PC-culture by re-purposing its phrases into an overactive college-bro/frat attitude. Kyle comes under fire because he said he doesn't think that Caitlyn Jenner is a hero :p .. and Cartman internalizes PC culture in terms of Tom Brady's cheat scandal..

Nice start to the season! I'm guessing that even though Kyle caved to pressure and made a PC statement that goes against his real opinion, the show's new continuity love will mean that he can work out more nuance and critique in future episodes. Was also fun to see them portray PC's lynch-mob attitudes: where the internet lynch-mob attacks people into cultural submission, the PC frat hyper-examines slights and turns them into a volatile atmosphere (basically becoming the stereotype of the "anti-bully" bully).

Trump seemed to have survived well enough. He actually seemed sane, too, which worries me (has he actually become electable?).
Also watched Sanders' interview, but he didn't really say very much about anything. He basically just repeated the "1% vs 99%" mantra without going into specifics about his plans, even after Colbert asked for specifics. I know he has more of a platform than that, just seems like he wasted the TV spot ... Even Trump mentioned his "wall" plan and even made it sound somewhat realistic.

Jon Oliver was on Colbert... so I guess I have to watch it :p
Doesn't seem like Colbert has had anyone interesting on for a bit: Michelle Obama (who cares?), Mindy Kaling (pseudo-feminism for the dull mainstream), Malala Yousafzai (seems like she gets too many interviews; never anything particularly interesting to say.. still just riding a fame wave), some random cardinal (Colbert's annoying religious angle) ... but Jim Gaffigan and Huge ActorMan were good guests :)

..
Also watched the episode 1&2 premiere of Heroes Reborn..
- Don't think I can stand Chuck's (Zachary Levi's) bad acting (like, yeah, I "totally" believed that you suffered a traumatic loss.. sadly, L.A. clones can't replicate emotion)
- Would viewers really have to suffer that "misused list" trope again (where the list of all mutants was used against them)?
- with Kitana girl they poorly borrowed the trope of grabbing someone's weapon and having them become super focused from it (Bourne Identity, Equilibrium, etc.)
- Annoying game world graphics.. an excuse for the writers to mask violence that they'd never show
- Also a very "convenient" shoulder wound for bearded truther..; that -totally- doesn't show that the writers will save characters that they like at the expense of the situations that they create (an effect which removes any drama or concern)

I don't see any reason to think that the writers learned anything from their former failures. If they wanted to show a break from season 4 (that lame carnival stuff), they should have written out Claire Bennet permanently. She should not have had a part on the show after season 1, and her continued presence only showed that Heroes was a producer's game (producers being unwilling to make any decisions for fear that they'd lose money). It's still early and it might get better, but I don't think I can subject myself to this :/
Palem

Fri Oct 02 15:53:11
Eh, I think the (original) show's only real big flaw was that the writers clearly had NO FUCKING IDEA on how to write the show after season 1. They might have had a general idea of how they wanted the story to go, as far as the heroes, and primatech and all that, but on an episode-by-episode basis they had absolutely nothing and too many characters to keep up with to actually get quality material for everyone. So we ended up with stupid bullshit like "Nice Guy Sylar" and "African Issac" lol

As far as Reborn goes, I'm mildly disappointed in where the story seems to be going. It's got WAYYYY too much of an X-Men vibe and that bothers me to no end. The original did such a good job, in my opinion, of feeling like it was it's own thing, and not an X-Men rip-off. Still just 3 episodes in, so I'll reserve harsh judgement for now.
Cherub Cow
Member
Fri Oct 02 16:54:50
Yeah and I think their lack of knowing how to write was from producers wanting to protect marketable aspects of the show (Claire's popularity, family dynamics, etc.) — and that clinging to the marketable meant rehashing things that had already happened (a symptom of being afraid to make decisions). Like they realized they'd created a good villain with Sylar, so they kept him alive and even reversed the entire theme of season 1 by basically making him immortal. They also failed to kill Nathan Petrelli in the explosion (draining the impact of the finale — a failure that they didn't correct until much later), kept forcing Claire into bland situations (like that high school hallways episode where she has the shotgun), etc.. And their theme of the "everyday hero" also made the show lame, because they wanted so much for these way-too-average types to become important (like the dumb cop — very much "The Myth of Superman" in action; people want to be extraordinary, they just don't want to change in order to attain it). They were afraid to give anyone too much power because then they'd have to actually develop the show (like their handicapping of Peter Petrelli, one of the only interesting characters -until- they prevented him from growing) ... Was definitely a waste of time to watch a show that just wanted to bide its time and save all of its characters in glass jars.

..
"So we ended up with stupid bullshit like 'Nice Guy Sylar' and 'African Issac'"

Looks like Reborn already has elements of "African Issac" with that predictive comic book given to "Kitana Girl." They want to contrive the graphic novel connection again, because it was part of "the look" of the show. It's all demographic manipulation. Random appeals to gamers, high school dramas which will somehow never be defeated despite having the power to do so (even "Saved by the Bell" and "Buffy" went to college)...

Blah. I have too many complaints.

They made fun of that modernist gentrification model that seems to be spreading everywhere (all those industrial-façade places with "artisan"-chic/fusion businesses) — the future's strip malls. Especially liked the closing scene where in a few frames they showed a family walking around Whole Foods with an expression like, "we can't afford any of this".. because that's the only way I experience that place :D ... I think the only thing affordable at Whole Foods is their daily pastries, and that's only because they have to get rid of them quickly.

Finished season 1 of Gotham. Really liked it.

It has the same low-budget, corny feeling that I get from Agents of Shield. Where Agents of Shield tries to situate itself in the 'real world', however, the folks behind Gotham have decided to craft their own Gotham City. The result is that AoS feels campy but Gotham is immersive.

I suppose this approach makes sense given the different material for the shows, but Gotham really seems to have stronger production values and the narrative really benefits from the world-building and wide array of familiar characters.

I guess part of that is the result of the actors performances - nobody seems to take themselves very seriously, and many (like Ben McKenzie) shoot for an intentionally out-the-top acting style that is both cringe worthy and appropriate.

Highly recommend it.

Yes! :D much lols.. I never feel bad about saying "no" to those, though. I'd only donate if it was, "would you like to give a dollar to a system of eugenics application in poverty-stricken regions?" ;p

also much lols from the "shaming" side of the episode. That fits well with Reddit not being allowed to make fun of fat people anymore..

Because Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless have been back on the same show again ("Ash vs. Evil Dead" right meow, and of course Campbell did guest spots on Xena), they went on Colbert with fun results (they walk out at about 34:20):

Bruce Campbell basically went full Bruce Campbell and didn't let anyone talk, even Colbert, who basically just sat there laughing :D

John Oliver's opening monologue from last weekend was fun (basically swore about Paris for a few minutes):

The rest of the episode was just about those "not illegal yet" gambling sites (like Fan Duel and Draft Kings), so mostly skippable

Liked that they talked about how it's retarded to try to ban the word "retarded," also liked the Blade Runner (Turing Test) reference ending ("does she know?"), and how the PC frat called attention to the fact that "being marginalized" (consciously playing the victim) actually gives people cultural capital ("Bro! We're the victims now! Like, we're being marginalized! Like, that makes us pretty cool!"). This last one seems to have become a popular cop-out.. ("I'm marginalized, thus my shitty ideas have become untenable!") ;p

just finished watching all of Jessica Jones

I enjoyed it, but I think I liked the comic series it was based on more... I think I'll re-read that comic series now

The scene that set the tone for the series on the first show was when Ritter ended a conversation on the toilet and turned to find the toilet paper roll was empty. The next shot was a close up of her blue jeaned ass, lol

They have a good Luke Cage. His series should be out in 2016 followed by Iron fist in 2017? And the group action The Defenders after that.

There is some uproar about letting Iron Fist be white, so make him asian. But some are bitching about that. I say make him Mexican.

Iron Fist has always been white in the comics. If they really want to make him Asian they can, but I don't think it's necessary. Aside from that, I believe they have decided to scrap Iron Fist and are going for a Punisher series.

Where did you here that? Claire Temple seems to be the character that threads through all the series.

oh kewls! hope it happens. If not, I think Iron Fist should be an Apache Attack Helicopter!

Was able to watch a few episodes of Jessica Jones on Turkey Holocaust. It was good! Ritter definitely showed even more character range; she plays a brooding type really well. Actually, she should probably be green-screened over all of Anne Hathaway's pretentious crap ;p ..
