After Earth (to be released 2013)

Teaser trailer:
http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/VzHbdlSKX1w

"directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith."

Yep.. so it will probably be terrible. They tried to make the trailer dramatic, but all I could think was, "Jaden Smith again? .. ugh"

If Will Smith had cast someone else for his son, that would have worked, but his -actual- son? Poor choice. And Shyamalan's record should go without saying.. there can be hope, but not much. Plus it looked like another CGI-animal movie, which makes it difficult to care about the perceived danger...

..since studios steal each other's scripts or get wind of the ideas, this appears to be the superior version of the destroyed Earth plot:

Oblivion (April 2013 release)
Teaser:

with Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, and Olga Kurylenko

samuel jakson wants to reappear as some sort of hologram. i mean the guy had like 3 lines in the entire star wars 1-3 movies so you can understand how important he is to star wars. no mace winduu, no star wars 7.

..
"i mean the guy had like 3 lines in the entire star wars 1-3 movies so you can understand how important he is to star wars."

lol, truthi ;D
I can't believe the vanity some actors/actresses have.. like, "hey movie maker: change/adapt plot to insert me artificially into the story! It'll be great, promise" %D

..and that's how big productions get ruined; every little peon changes the work until it becomes a fragment of its original intention. I'm sure Disney will mess this up, but less so than Lucas at least.

March 29 Release

Basically Focus Features (awesome) is remaking "Drive" with elements that make it more attractive to larger audiences. It still looks nice and gritty :) .. crime drama with "Heat" notes -- Police and criminals working against each other. Also has a good director and, of course, Ryan Gosling :p

Speaking of Gosling, Gangster Squad opens tomorrow night! Supposedly they removed that scene from the previews where they all walk through a movie screen shooting the crowd though.. They've let James Holmes win!! :(

With Lucas (presumably) unable to write/direct/produce the movies, they are at least back on neutral footing with a chance at being decent. He should, and hopefully will, remain a consultant, but one that is only used for brainstorming ideas. And then someone with a brain goes through them and picks the ones that are actually decent. That is the only way Lucas could ever have a positive influence on Star Wars again.

Oblivion looks like it might be a fun movie to go see at the IMAX with the brain turned off. Star Trek 2 - obviously. If it is even half as good as the first, it'll still be a good movie.

i have high hopes for star wars. everyone wants it to be like star wars 4-6. but let not get ahead of ouyrselves. if the next movie turns out like 1-3, than it is forever dead.

Agreed.. they don't have to make 4-6, just -don't- make it like 1-3.. I feel like it's in good hands though. Even bad Disney movies can still be pretty good :)

"The Wolverine" is still set for a 2013 release date (July 26):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1430132/

Looks like they kept on track even though they changed directors. Would have been really cool to see an Aronofsky superhero movie, but it could be a good sign that they wanted to hire him (maybe means this will be a very dark movie)

I like all the comments that suddenly care about reverse-degradation. It's an entertaining contradiction when people sarcastically turn to say "but since it's girls killing guys, it's ok?" -- even though their feigned objection is sourced through their mindless consumption of every other f-ing movie. So yeah, it cuts both ways. Deal.

Preview Hilarity:

The Call (2013) - March 15th release
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2I85cPlhk0
...

[not to shamelessly promote my blog, but this review makes a lot more sense with pictures at cherubcow.com]

I haven't been so impressed with a trailer's ability to be the entire movie since 2002's "Enough" or maybe 2009's "The Stepfather", but trailers for "The Call" have managed to show the extremes of an already badly-conducted world of movie advertisement. The only thing that -really- surprises me about this is that even the proletariat movie watcher class seems aware that this was too much [see YouTube comments]. In any normal case, proles would invite any and all spoilers, ruining appetite for the "meal" of the feature with the cookies of the teasers, but *this*??: exceptional! ;D

So, to take a look at a movie that is seen entirely through the trailer...

The Plot
(spoilers ahead, unless you watched the trailer)
Halle Berry, a mannequin famous for her fiberglass performances in such movies as "Swordfish", "Die Another Day", and the abomination "Catwoman", stars in this movie where she plays Jordan Turner, a 9-1-1 operator whose poor decision-making results in a serial killer taking his next victim.

In fielding this call, she is unexpectedly disconnected -- and calls back -- letting the killer know exactly where his next victim is hiding.

Leah Templeton (Evie Thompson), the victim, is pulled out from under the bed like so many other movie character's before her, and Turner is left making idle threats over the phone.

She tries to talk him out of it ..but.. "it's already done," and we see a murderous strike.

Turner later.. *turns*.. to the news.. (TURBO PUNS!) and sees that this was the 6th victim of this particular serial killer.

She is consoled by dreamboat Police Officer Paul Phillips (Morris Chestnut), but soon it's right back to work.. for her, *and* the killer!

"The Call"'s next, modern valley girl victim is then identified in a parking garage,

..where she is *taken*!

But! She wakes up.. in the trunk of the car!

..on the highway!

But! She has her cell phone still, and makes a call. To a familiar number. To. 9. 1. 1.

Even though she was seen speaking on a glittery iPhone, for whatever reason it shows up as a "disposable" with "No GPS Information," which seems a very curious plot discrepancy given that teen U.S.A. would most certainly not even be aware that the iPhone can be purchased 'off contract'/'off plan' and given that its internal hardware would still make a trace very easy, even with a pre-paid SIM card installed... it must be that she locates a backup phone (with lesser ability) somehow, because the shape change is too apparent. But *nevermind*! Let's get this show on the... *road*? (see, because they were on the road... yes, weaksauce all around)

For some reason, the operator who answered the call, "doesn't know what to do," is scared, and turns to Turner for help.

Turner is also scared, but this is her chance. History has repeated itself, and this time she'll do things right.

Talking with this now -potential?- victim, Casey Welson (Abigail Breslin of "Little Miss Sunshine"), Turner has her describe her location and gets her to kick out the tail lights

..and attempt to wave at other cars

It appears that the killer notices Casey's attempt, because he almost gets in an accident to stop at a gas station. There is a slight gap in the preview, so viewers will have to use their imagination and guess that he scolded her and slammed the trunk to show how angry he is.

Turner keeps it moving by getting Casey to escape through the backseat.

She is noticed by a gas station customer, but he is drenched in sexy gasoline like Zoolander's tragically beautiful friends.

A short while later, the killer stops, discovers Casey's cell phone, and speaks again with Turner. She tells him to stop, but she hears his voice again: "it's already done"

(her inner monologue: "omgs! it's him!")

At some point the killer is spotted.

But calling 9-1-1 just makes Christopher Moltisanti another victim in the warpath.

In the meantime, Officer Phillips is chasing down leads.

He finds one house, but the killer isn't there. A photograph shows a secluded cabin which they intend to check next.

Personally involved now, Turner takes it upon herself to search, and gets there before the Police.

Casey had her own chase scenes in the house,

...but now Turner spots the killer,

and attacks!

but is almost drowned!!

Unanswered Questions
So does she escape?!?! Oh noes!! Yeah, she probably does. In a scene which predicts Christopher Dorner in a small way, Police charge the hidden cabin.

We can probably guess that Turner saves Casey, the cavalry cleans up, and some of the other tropes take place.

But what of the cell phones? If not to find out exactly how the ending goes down, don't we need to purchase tickets to discover why 3 different cell phones make appearances in the trailer? Well, that will be a difficult personal question that every person must weigh on the individual soul. Can you live without knowing what takes place in the other five minutes of this movie? Can you?*

Overall
All in all it was pretty okay. At less than 2 minutes and 26 seconds, the trailer for "The Call" shows Enough of the movie that you can safely say, "I saw that," and maybe check wikipedia later to verify this impression. The lack of time commitment here is ideal, and this broadcasts the true future of cinema.

*Yes.

Jurassic Park is moastly just a nostalgia watch, but Evil Dead looks like a really solid horror remake, and Pines looks like "Drive" with moar characters ;p

..just found out that a new Godzilla movie is scheduled for 2014

It could be okay.. too early to really speculate (no trailer atm), but they've said they plan to take it seriously and make it dark (not like the friendly 1998 Godzilla that says "hi, I'm sad" to Ferris Bueller). Having Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche is a good sign, but Elizabeth Olsen is in it, and "Silent House" was so horrible that it will be really difficult to get past that ;D

"I’m starting to think that instead of seeing the movie posters and trailers for After Earth and thinking, 'Oh, what a cool idea, Will Smith and his son are acting together,' people are actually rolling their eyes and saying, 'Give me a fucking break.'"

"somewhere along the line, when my wealthy, A-list celebrity parents began developing projects solely as vehicles to build my career ..."

"people might view the movie as less of a great film starring an actor they love and his lovable son, and more of a soulless vanity project"

"Would I enjoy seeing the face of a young teenager plastered on movie posters across the entire nation, not because of who he is, but because of who his father is? ... it’s conceivable that I might find it unbelievably infuriating and downright unbearable."

"And, because of these things, I do not want to see After Earth at all. I’d much rather go see that dumb magician movie this weekend instead"

"my newest movie will probably make millions of dollars at the box office this weekend. So who gives a fuck what you people think?"

After Earth, a sci-fi adventure starring Will Smith and his son Jaden and featuring a Scientology-related narrative, took in just $27 million last weekend, a small fraction of its $135 million budget and the $100 million Sony spent on marketing. What do you think?"

Hobbit2 for sure! Looking forward to that

The 'Jobs' movie looks like "Pirates of Silicon Valley" from Apple's perspective, which seems to say that it was targeted at Apple consumers who think that owning an Apple will somehow make them innovators.. (consume consume consume!) so that'll do well :/

This was actually released already in May but it's on DVD soon. It's by the director of Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn) and like Drive it also has Ryan Gosling.. should be fun!

Noah (March 2014)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qmj5mhDwJQ

I can't tell if this is completely absurd and ridiculous, or if it has potential. It's about Noah's Ark, so, okay, ridiculous. But... it's by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream).. and it has Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, and Jennifer Connelly.

..leaning moar towards ridiculous. Kind of suspicious that Aronofsky is disappointed that the Academy didn't give him the award for Black Swan, so maybe he's debasing himself for them? No idea

!!!!!!!!
I had to stop watching the trailer because it looks really good:
Transcendence (Release of April 18)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCTen3-B8GU

With Johnny Depp and Rebecca Hall. It looks like a modern Lawnmower Man; Depp's character is developing an AI with Skynet-like implications, but a Luddite group sabotages his network and attempts to murder him.. and his peeps upload his consciousness.. then apparent mayhem :D
